The first post was sexist and dated. We interpreted it as such because it was. The original author did indeed single out women and this follow up is ridiculous. To suggest that AT is not part of 'our culture' and/or responsible for the messages it sends out is also ridiculous. I expect better, and will hold AT to a higher standard of writing, etc.

To Playdate or Not To Playdate When Your House is a Mess?
6/30/14 01:22 PM

I grew up in a walkable place, with loads of neighborhood kids to play with and get into trouble with. I never had a playdate. The weather could be too to, but never too cold. So we played all day without much parental involvement. My kids don't live in the someplace. Thankfully because that was one tough barrio, and many of my friend didn't make it out. We moved to the midwest because of my job, and we live in a nice neighborhood with small homes close to our work. There are kids in adjacent neighborhoods. But there are no sidewalks, and the street outside of our subdivision is fast moving, no tiny shoulders. If we don't drive our 8 year old to a friends house for playdates and have other parents do the same, she would have about 3 people to play with. Period. So KHinNJ you go back to your rarefied, perfect place with happy feral kids who need no parental involvement, and leave the rest of us to work out how our kids play, etc. in a world that is complex shaped by real life compromises, etc. In other words, while I may share your sentiments to a certain degree, your post was unnecessarily harsh and judgmental.

That is what I thought as well! I would be embarrassed to have written this at any point in my life. Hiring someone to clean your mess is simply the privilege of a bourgeois teenager.

Yes, this is why we have decided to stay out in our small house. Last year we put our house on the market and fielded offers, and then changed our mind. We stumbled over who will clean all of this, who will furnish it, and what will it mean for our family.
