Lol, you're right about more beans! I have not yet mastered the art of bean cooking save lentils. I was thinking I'd save and invest in a pressure cooker for more beanie goodness.

Fountain pens are wonderful! The cheaper ones are only 15$ and a good bottle of ink can be about 12$. They're a little different but with a little tlc they'll last forever.

I make a little more than minimum wage, but I live in a one bedroom apartment by myself and go to school. Here are some of what I do:

*I live in a basement apartment, which faces away from the hot afternoon sun. Therefore, I rarely turn on the air conditioner.

*I take out cash for food and gas. I try to rarely use my card.

*I take my lunch to work. I also brew my own coffee and/or tea.

*For period concerns, I use a "Diva Cup." Silly name and not for everyone, but as it is reusable I have saved a lot with not having to purchase pads or tampons.

*I buy food from sale ads.

*Freeze freeze freeze. I buy bakery bread in twos, slice then freeze. I also freeze fruit and vegetables and soups.

*Less meat, more grains.

*I love to write, so I use fountain pens! Which means less waste and ultimately less money because you buy a bottle of ink which lasts a long time.

*Books and DVDs from the library.

*Every paycheck, take a tiny amount (such as ten dollars) for an emergency home fund in case something breaks.

*For cleaning, I use lemon rinds soaked in vinegar for 3 weeks. Strain into a spray bottle, it's an easy cleaner!

This is a wonderful post, and it reminds me of when I was growing up.

I completely agree you do develop a sense of pride, and even a sense of fun to be able to figure out how to make it work with what you have and make it the best you can.

I think that's part of it, making it fun instead of allowing low sources of income to bring you down.

I have made a rule of no technology an hour before I go to sleep (with the exception of a softly humming humidifier)-it makes quite a difference.

Lately I've been reading Charlotte Kasl's book, "If the Buddha Got Stuck" and it has been very calming. Either that, or poetry by Rumi.

I love the lecture idea, did you take the recordings yourself or did you find them online?

At first I thought it was a great idea, but after pondering I realized this would make my small bathroom look even more cluttered.

I agree on the second picture-does that bathroom even get used!?

I also like to have a nice clean kitchen the morning. Even if I'm tired at night, it's just so much nicer to wake up to a clean kitchen to start the day.

I second fresh flowers! I never bought any until recently- I just love them!
