We were at Disney World yesterday and someone had yarn bombed a metal Mickey silhouette on the way in from the parking lot. It was there when we got there at 7:45 but was gone when we left 8 hours later. I don't think Disney was amused! We were...

I second the recommendation for India Tree. I'm sure the people commenting that "it's just one day, use blue" don't mean any harm, but some kids have food sensitivities (like mine who become aggressive with ADHD-like symptoms and sleep disruptions from artificial dyes). For my kids, even one tiny Skittle can disrupt their little systems and then it takes three days before they're back to their normal selves. So yes, go with something natural and skip the toxic petroleum-based artificial dyes.

My kids are allergic to gluten, casein, soy and artificial dyes and I always find out what will be served at the party and bring acceptable substitutes for them to eat. I don't expect people to accommodate my kids with food (since their allergies are pretty crazy) but I do appreciate it when people ask me if there is anything they can serve that the kids can eat. As far as other kids, we have friends whose kids have allergies too and I always plan the menu accordingly so her kids can have at least something on the menu. It's not that hard to use egg replacer instead of real eggs or almond milk instead of cow's but I get how people would be intimidated by it. Before I had kids, I never knew anybody with a food allergy and wouldn't know where to start when cooking for someone with special dietary needs. That being said, not inviting a kid with allergies because you don't want to deal with it is bull and it infuriates me that someone would do that.

We have one of those clear plastic office chair mats under each side of the table and I keep a pile of cut up receiving blankets handy to wet and wipe up the mess. Not very creative but it saves the carpet from sudden doom.

We actually just moved all of our kid's toys out of their rooms last week. My almost 3 year old was getting up at 3am to play with the toys in his room so we needed to do something. Both kids have all of their books in their rooms but no more toys. Now my living room looks like a preschool classroom but I kind of dig it.
