Lightening Up: Declutter Media Collections January Cure Assignment #16
1/23/14 10:17 AM

Halfway OMG! I feel like my house will take a whole extra "cure" afterwards though, as I don't feel half "done" with how I want my spaces to be.

I have a lot of work today (and art to finish for a show this weekend, yikes) but I will try to get more stuff out of my office. I got rid of two chairs and a desk, so it's a start. (I also found a new pair of headphones while I was sorting stuff, but that only shows that there's masses of stuff to be sorted....)

*repeats* The perfect cannot be the enemy of the practical. Progress is good.

I have a fitness class tonight and then a dinner-out date with my spouse, so my temptations and opportunities to plug in will be limited. Obviously I won't be at home much either! Guess I'll try not to get online before bed.

I *love* the deer umbrella stand! But it isn't a very efficient use of space, so I can't justify having one.

Ebay has some good lumber sellers that might source what you'd like for a shelf, such as maybe this?

I'd also check craigslist if your area has any reclaimed lumber going around. (Here we have people dismantling barns semi-regularly.)

Enjoy!

I think I've already done this. As part of a large household, I already have a basket on a mail table. In doing my kitchen on the weekend, I created a spot for my keys and the dog's things. And since I own sixteen million coats and hats and boots, I have several coat racks and hook setups and shoe organizers, in three spots in the house.

I do need to sort through the stuff on those and cull some if I can bear to, but I think that may be a different (definitely larger-scale) project. (Today I wore the fuzzy-lined rain boots, which I don't really use very often, but today they were *perfect*.)

Go you! Yeah, I must keep in mind that the perfect should not be the enemy of the practicable, not in general and certainly not in the Cure. My kitchen really does look better, and it's nicer to work in there too, and I bet the same's for yours :)

Thanks again for the support, I needed that!

I cleaned and re-set the thermocouple -- that's our usual culprit, but this one is almost new -- and got a roommate to help clean out the pilot as well. It's only been one night but it's still holding up. And we got a new backup thermocouple as well, and have another coming in on order (I ordered it a few days ago after the furnace went out the first time). So we're struggling along :)

Thanks funkytown! I ended up finishing the second countertop and doing two drawers (out of five in the kitchen. I'm pretty pleased. I don't know when I have days off this month; I'll try to catch up as crazy work schedule allows. Meanwhile I will take your good advice, do a happy dance and DECLARE VICTORY! (Those countertops were truly awful, and now they are nice.)

And now I am going to take my dog for a walk :)

OK I AM FEELING THE FAILURE HERE

I got the largest clutteredest countertop cleaned out, and the worst cabinet. I set up the lighting I'd been meaning to for ages. And I already made two perfectly nice meals in there.

But I'm in the midst of second-worst countertop (there are really only two countertops, plus some tiny spaces) and I just wanna give up. I'm making a bag of bags, a box of keys and batteries, and I need to figure out where to put all the dog's things (toys, leashes, bags) and I can't even LOOK at it anymore.

And I never even started on the drawers, let alone the stovetop.

I guess technically I still have six hours but I'm really out of cope already.

I work weekends, so maybe this aspect of the schedule of the cure just isn't going to be easy for me?

Also I think our furnace just keeled over :(

Go you being THAT person :) What lovely and environmentally sound ideas! This week everyone's xmas discards are out for trash collection; it would be super easy to walk around and pick up beautiful evergreen displays.

I have a little maple out front that I prune over the winter (it gets hugely tangled every year) and I love to use the sculptural branches in arrangements. (I have one such going into an art show next weekend!)

My kitchen is scary. We have three kitchens in this house and aside from frozen pizza and cold cereal I usually cook in one of the other ones, but it's pretty clear which kitchen needs this treatment, so I'd better deal with it. Hope I can manage this one.

PS. Anyone else still doing fine with last week's flowers? I bought a tiny rosebush -- I didn't realize they were supposed to be *cut* flowers -- and they're only more beautiful now.

I was already going to do a single element of decluttering my machine room today (return a borrowed desk to a friend), so I'll add trashing the broken chairs as well. There's still a bookshelf in that room I'd like to remove, but that entails decluttering the hutch and consolidating the contents, and that might take too long? Guess I'll see when I'm doing it.
