I use an App to track every penny of my spending (I use EEBA). After tracking for all of 2012, I better understood my category spending and made many cuts. In 2013 I built a category budget that was 25% less across the board. It was very difficult at times, I often robbed one budget to use in another category but I never overspent. I ended up saving several thousand dollars in 2013. I also pay credit cards in full every month. I would never carry a balance, it's money down the drain.
I am saving $ for a trip to Paris. It makes it much easier to restrain my spending. Would I rather have this pair of shoes/restaurant meal or would I prefer to upgrade to nicer Paris accommodations or have $$ for the Paris flea markets? Easier choice.

Wow. This was a real challenge. I worked on the kitchen Friday, Saturday and Sunday and finished in times for the Globes last night.
I took every item out of every cupboard on Friday. Saturday a.m. our back door seized from the ice and we needed to ask a handy friend to help with the repair. Pretty embarrassing to have to clear a path for him through all the mess! But by Saturday night the cupboards and countertops were cleaned and organized. This was tough. I like to display a lot of things and to pare down meant some hard choices. I realize I don't need EVERYTHING out at once and moved about 30% of my crap to a storage closet. By moving the composter beside veggie chopping area, tossing an enormous chopping block and moving bread basket to the cupboards, I now have about 25% more counter space and things make more sense. I also took my "good dishes" out of the credenza and moved them to the kitchen to use more often. What am I waiting for?
Sunday was all about food. I wanted to call in a hazmat team for the fridge. A full jar of pickles had leaked all over everything. I plugged my nose and worked through it. I don't even like pickes. Tossed 1/4 lb of onion skins and a lot of salad dressing but not much expired food. Yay!
Had a delicious roast beef done in the crock pot. Snarked over the Globes with my sister. All in all, one of my more productive weekends. Very happy with the results.

My guest room door has glass panels - not great for privacy. I am going to use some drawer liner to cover the panes.
Also I am gathering up my art to figure out my framing needs. I'm finally going to create an art wall and a picture gallery.
