Transitioning from my parents' house to a college dorm to an upper flat with 3 roommates to a one bedroom apartment with my boyfriend has taught me to never under appreciate a garbage disposal. I'm avoiding doing the dishes because the sink is clogged. Living in 100+ year old buildings has its quirks!

I have a long skinny kitchen. So skinny, in fact, that when I open the oven door all the way it's 3in from the opposite cabinets.

I'm not sure if anyone had mentioned this, but as a college student candles are EXPENSIVE! I get whatever I like at TJMaxx or Homegoods for between $6 and $8! The candles smell wonderful and they're big, AND they come in pretty jars. I'm in love. I see no sense in buying one for >$20 if I like the smell of a cheaper one just the same. This is totally not a sponsored post, I just have found that it's the best value. Say what you want about Homegoods furniture and decorations, but those candles...

I'm not sure this counts as a restaurant, but my dad re-did our family room when I was in middle school and modeled it after the local Caribou Coffee. It turned out exactly like the shop!

My parents never entertained. I mean, we had the occasional neighbor over, but I never remember them having any type of gathering. As a result, now that I'm an adult and on my own I find entertaining to be really stressful. Maybe a lot of that is from my personality, but I find myself too worried that no one will show up or have fun. I have the occasional friend over and I have dreams of hosting parties and showing off my apartment, but I don't think it'll happen.

I love going to parties though! I'm just mystified on how to make sure everyone has a good time.

We have 2 adjacent walls (one east-facing) covered in old windows (6.5 of them) , and I reeeeaaalllyyy want to put the bed in that corner but the radiator would be blocked and it would force the bed to stick out past the doorway. I love the idea though and would definitely do it if I could!!

I really only have 2 boards that I use frequently: "Apartment Decorating" and "If I Had a Million Dollars" <(everything [mostly clothes] that I want but cannot afford).

I recently started another board with just plants and flowers because I found myself seeing pictures of flowers that I liked but no place to pin them!

My Apartment Decorating board has over 300 pins but it's my main inspiration for how I want my home to feel so I like that it's really full. I frequently go through it looking for ideas that are congruent with my goals, like how I should paint a bookshelf or what style chairs to add to the living room, or throw pillows! So far it seems to be working and this past month I've accomplished a lot.

I got Madison, WI; Rockford, IL; and Milwaukee, WI. Having grown up in MN and been in school in Milwaukee for 4 years, and a mom who is from IL, I guess this whole thing is pretty accurate for me!

Super bowl party for me! I hope to have pictures hung, shelves built, and a floor plant for the corner. And a clean and tidy apartment of course :)

I live in an early 1900's apartment and I fall in love with it every day! I've got huge windows (and a lot of them!) so there's tons of natural light, and the dark wood trim is still in tack.

However, the kitchen is very narrow, and when I open the oven door it is 3in away from hitting the lower cabinets across from it. It's almost impossible to have 2 people in there cooking at the same time! But I've got tons of storage and plenty of counter space so I won't complain.

I prefer to call flaws "quirks". People have quirks and houses have quirks!

Being Grateful About Your Home's (Unfixable) Flaws

My parents got divorced when I was a sophomore in college, and my mom (an ER nurse) has since married a paramedic with 2 adult paramedic children. My sister and I are both nursing majors. While we don't walk around naked (blended family, didn't grow up together that sort of thing) our dinner and everyday conversations are very naked and graphic. Example: talking about STDs at dinner 2 nights ago while we were all celebrating Christmas and my sister pulled up a real life full frontal picture from the internet on her phone. Totally normal.

With my friends, nudity isn't a big deal. Most of my friends are nursing majors anyways so we've had to strip down to shorts/bras (or just shorts if you're a male) in class.

I think it really just depends on the company you're in.

Are You From a Naked Family?
1/10/14 11:31 AM

Being a college student with ONLY enough money to buy food, pay rent/bills, and keep myself clean, my Christmas list included items varying between things I needed and things I din't NEED but really would make life easier. In my family, once you graduate high school you don't receive gifts from extended family members like aunts and uncles; however, parents usually still buy gifts for their kids no matter their age. My mom and dad want to know what I actually need/want instead of guessing so I gave them a list. I think providing a list is great for people who will be buying you most of your gifts. My aunt still gave me small gifts like a candle and a tree ornament but I think if I were to give her a list when the agreement is to not buy me anything it would be a little presumptuous and bratty since she didn't have to give me anything at all.

With all that said, I really think that you have to be careful when providing lists of what you want, and just do what's right for your family! My boyfriend's family just tells each other exactly what to get them so there are no guessing games (but also no surprises). So do what works for you and remember that no one HAS to get you any gifts at all ;)

As a (fabulously) broke college student, I can't afford to spend money on flowers. But cleaning my floors is a must!! Thanks to Christmas, I've got a couple green cleaners and my GORGEOUS 1900's apartment will surely thank me for it.
