Two big potential issues to keep in mind:

1) Access/security. How are you controlling who can see those documents or not? Some (manuals) don't pose any risk, while others (tax returns) can be used for identity theft if accessed inappropriately. Whether you've got them at your home or on the cloud, make sure you've got appropriate security in place!

2) Preservation. Digital records are not forever. Systems break down, CDs decay, file formats become obsolete. Keeping something 3 years shouldn't be a problem; keeping it 20 will probably give you some challenges.

As a professional in this stuff, I'd say don't shred anything vital unless you're confident that you're aware of risks and are able to take smart measures to avoid them.

We're having an opening ceremonies party tomorrow evening, where my politically aware friends and I will be discussing all of the problems inherent in these games, while also watching the pageantry and sharing internationally-themed potluck.

Informed criticism is the best criticism.

And it would be hypocritical to pretend I'm not going to be watching the downhill ski events.

Phew -- catch-up is a good thing. I've officially postponed clothing for a February task. But in the past week I've done far more with the home office than planned -- the need for a new computer spurred some of that along -- with new curtains, new rugs, improved art hanging, and getting rid of a good amount of junk. I've set up a scanner that was still in its box and am reducing the stored paper documents. Cords are imperfect but better than they were. And I started this with the master plan to get rid of the stack of empty cardboard boxes :)

Bathroom cupboards and media collection both benefited from a bit of pruning, but weren't bad at all.

And it feels awesome to hand unwanted items off to people who will use them.

Another fairly easy night for me -- part of a circle of rotating potlucks among friends, so I've got one of those AND book club in the first 2 weeks of February. Everything is already arranged.

Doing the kitchens over the weekend was a bit exhausting. I didn't get to everything I intended, but some serious improvements were made, particularly in the pantry. I still need to deal with junk drawers ... but perhaps that one is for tomorrow.

This evening I fixed the frame on a small painting, and bought & hung a new curtain in the home office. It's, um, a slight improvement, but not quite enough. The room's still incoherent, no matter how tidy it gets.

January Cure: Assignment # 8

Oh I was going to do so much tonight. And then I arrived home to some frozen pipes (it happens every winter, no biggie, but usually overnight ... so I've been running the water overnight but didn't think I'd need to 24/7 ...)

But I enjoyed sitting in odd places and thinking. The living room is nearly perfect except the corner where recycling gets stored. I've got to move that all somewhere else. The home office has got kind of an undergraduate-dorm vibe to it which I'd like to shift. Proper curtains and reducing the piles-of-stuff would be a good start.

My 2-week-old carnations were still mostly looking good, but we picked up some lilies as well and re-cut and re-arranged everything. Fixing up the old flowers made them look even better. I'm starting to really enjoy cut flowers. (2 cats, who don't give them much trouble, at least not since I bought some very heavy and very stable (wider on the bottom) vases.)

Already good on the green cleaners :)

I did a quick run through the floors. My once-a-month cleaner is coming Tuesday morning, so I generally just do floor maintenance. To not feel like I was getting off too easy, I also wiped down all the windows. It's a cold but sunny day so it seemed like the right thing to do.

Registered just to do this ... my list is surprisingly short and it looks like I'll be focusing on storage in the kitchen, and the pile of cardboard boxes I've accumulated in the work area.
