I wouldn't bother holding on to "things" - shirts, books, dvds, etc go back to their original owners or are donated, as applicable. That said, I'll fully admit to having a small box full of old pictures, letters (a serious long-distance relationship), and whatnot. It stays. Because the people I dated are worth remembering, because the good times we shared were really good, and because my past means something to me that has nothing to do with my current relationship.

Frankly, if my husband had demanded that I throw out the contents of that box, it would have been a big huge sign that we weren't particularly well-suited - like, dude, why are you being threatened and possessive over something I did before we were together?

I'm in my late-20s, and I'm about as far away from the city core as I can get without being IN the city (to be fair, I work in the suburbs, so living away from downtown is both convenient and cheaper!)

Would I move farther out and buy a car/house in the suburbs? No. The long-term plan is to stay in the city until we can afford a house in the country 2-3 hours away from the city and nearer the family farm. Apartment dwelling in public-transit-land wins out until then!

RAD, with caveats.

Check for bedbugs, smells, stains, structural integrity, worn spots... With the size and tufting, recovering or slipcovering this could would be a very expensive option. Also, depending on what the legs look like under that skirt, maybe altering that might be an issue...

Also, it depends very strongly on the decor of the room it's going in to, and the size of that room... but it looks interesting, huge, and comfy. And cheap. What's not to love, really...

I've used (iffy) port to deglaze pans while cooking red meat - mmmmm.

I've also done a port reduction on cheese (a softer blue cheese) on crackers, for a party. YUM.

Depending on how much of a green thumb they have, a pergola over the top balcony could be pretty.

If that's not an option, what my landlord did with our current apartment would likely work, visually: he closed in the balcony with huge windows as a veranda. The windows open, the breeze is lovely, we enjoy the space so much, and it looks less... bare than a balcony on a and floor. That, some paint (the people above had great suggestions re: colour) and doing something about the door on the ground floor (small balcony with windowboxes? Interesting railing?) would be great.

Such a pretty table.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I like making a fuss over the tablesettings and porcelaine and silverware. It sets the scene, and it can be gorgeous, and a nice table is lovely when you've spent several hours cooking.

Also, if you're with people who are familiar with how a formal table works, the order and number of the utensils indicates what you'll be eating and in what order. I quite like obscure social codes - I probably spent too much time reading victorian literature and an impressionable age...

I've used wax paper or parchment paper in a pinch (with a bit of tape...), as well as cloth and paper towels, and mason jars.

Really, I tend to prefer mason jars, but you have to be careful not to overfill them because the liquid expands while freezing and it WILL crack the glass...

15$, on the very high end. Note that I'm in Quebec, so alcohol taxes are sky-high (a bottle of Bacardi is over 20$, and that's on the cheap end of liquor).

You can go to an iffy bar and generally get a rum and coke for 8-9$. 15$ for a decent cocktail in a good bar is about all I'm willing to pay for, honestly (for the record: my favorite bar, that makes amazing basil-infused rye sours and gin&tonics with homemade tonics, sells drinks for about 12$, so...)

What about casseroles? Shepard's pie, meatloaf, twice-baked potatoes... (These are also all things that can be frozen and re-heated by the new parents at a convenient time, which can be nice. Just tape re-heating instructions to the package!)

I've also had gluten-free lasagna noodles that were quite decent, and frozen lasagna made from gluten-free noodles worked really well.

I don't know if this helps, but I've had excellent luck freezing and defrosting cream cheese icing and gluten-free cupcakes (assembled, frosted, and everything!) without noticeable deterioration in quality (which is excellent to know, since gluten-free baked goods dry out so quickly!). Maybe try a test batch and see if that would work?

Floor-to-ceiling white curtains, and lots of white linens (if you buy couches, white slipcovers are easiest since they can be washed - I've bought decent ones on Overstock for pretty cheap). And plants. Lots of plants. Maybe with one accent color?

And yeah, I'll third the Scandinavian suggestion... It could look really great! :)

Ugh, I've had this problem - I've invited people over to (explicitly stated!) "post-dinner cocktails and snacks", and half the people arrived starving and not having eaten dinner.

I don't mind throwing a full dinner party - I like it! I do it regularly! - but sometimes you just kinda want to have 20 people over for snacks and drinks without necessarily feeling like you've got to feed the universe, y'know?

Suggestions on how to avoid this would be welcome - the past few times, "snacks" was a taco bar, because cheap+tasty+build-your-own was better on my nerves than having to come up with a last-minute dinner!

Based on the reading I've done, lead in glazing (or in old crystal glasses) isn't actually there in heavy enough amounts to have any healthcare impacts unless you're storing food in it (for example, storing liquid in lead crystal decanters is no good, because some of it will leach into the liquid).

There's just a level where our environment is toxic, to a certain extent: the tap water smells like bleach all summer, we live in cities surrounded by car exhaust, our food is soaked in pesticides unless we eat "organic" (and then promptly take a few tylenol...), our furniture is made with god-knows-what (don't get me started on pallet wood...). If you want to channel all anxieties into "no lead at all is acceptable on dishes", feel free, but perhaps a more holistic approach to health in general might be more relaxing.

That depends entirely on the apartment, and is something that's usually specified in the ad and can be clarified with the landlord prior to putting anything on a lease.

The landlords I've had have always been open to renting with OR without appliances, with a different rental rate (aka: you can rent appliances along with the apartment). We own our fridge and stove because we wanted nicer ones (cooking is my main hobby), and we figured that within 3-4 years, financially, it'd even out.

Third for Pepper Ana's list!

In terms of finding places, I highly recommend Padmapper - it cross-references Craigslist, Kijiji, etc, puts everything on a map, and then you can apply filter options. Brilliant!

Also, if your schedule is relatively steady (working weekdays, standard office hours) realize that most neighborhoods have excellent rush hour busses to downtown, and being farther away from the metro is SO much cheaper. For example, I live in Lachine - gorgeous 5 1/2, veranda, parking space, across the street from a park, heat included, great landlord, and dirt cheap, and, while Lachine can be out of the way for a lot of people, it takes my husband 45 minutes door-to-door to get from home to work downtown every day - about equivalent as what it used to take in NDG, where rents are much, much higher.

I'm currently hesitating between Feedly and Bloglovin - both have their good and bad points, but neither of them is really "clicking".

Honestly, nothing really could - what I want is something that keeps giving me what I'm currently getting, which was perfectly fine. Grrrr.

Going with mini-versions of things: anyone have a source for a really skinny dish drainer? I'd like to tuck it between the sink and the fridge, but the space is only about 7 inches!
