I'm astounded by the sexist comments on this post. Just because something has masculine or feminine elements to it, does not mean one sex would or would not prefer it over the other. It is only the US stereotypical mindset which creates this unnatural divide. Space should reflect the mood/tone it wishes to create. Before & After: Small Space, Big Changes The Sweeten |

I can see this as part of a combination design. Part traditional fridge or fridge 'drawer' for condiments and miscellaneous but this for the things that are in good shape like milk, produce, meat etc. the 'pretty' whole food things that we should eat more of anyway. The advice depends on whether you're catering this event or if you're doing this for a family member/friend and actually expect to attend the wedding & reception as a guest. If it's the former, then the sky's the limit. If, however, you're going to be a part of the wedding - realize that any attempt to 'gussy up' the presentation using various dishes (aside from the glass bakeware) will affect how long it takes to make it all happen. As for the ceramic pan display - unless you have buffet line attendants - it will just slow down the buffet line and get messy - especially if you're using flimsy foil pans. If you do want to 'dress up' the dishware, the easiest way is to decorate the table it's going to go onto. Advice on Making Fruit Crumbles for a Wedding Reception? Good Questions |

Lately it seems that many of the articles/recipes are titled by what the author 'intended' to make..but the recipe veers off in an entirely different direction. For example, the 'kosher' wine article a few days back. What a disappointment. Re-titling the article won't detract from what it is; instead, it will reduce the disappointment when the article doesn't actually deliver as advertized. What am I going to do next? I love fresh herbs. I'm going to try beets and green onions this spring as I have some extra deep porch ledge boxes. For anyone looking for deep window boxes, I would recommend looking for these instead as long as you intend to plant two rows (one on each side) as the center line of the box is shallower to accommodate a porch railing. "almost Kosher"...why bother posting it with the headline FOR PASSOVER if it's not Kosher for Passover? From the article and comments I've learned what the difference is...but it just makes the actual post even worse. If someone was to serve this after reading the first part of the article to Jewish guests observing Passover, it would be a serious insult. I wish this could be the case for my small family (my husband and I) but distance and different palettes makes that nearly impossible. Once in a great while my mother will join us, but I have to plan the menu in advance as her tastes are more basic/bland than our own - and she's the "adventurous" one. I don't even own a kitchen table yet...but some day I will...and hope to have good friends to invite over by then. Inviting Guests to the Family Dinner Table |

Did you know that due to the rise in 'popularity' in the US and elsewhere, the areas in South America which grow this grain - who have used it for many many years - can no longer afford it because demand has caused it to be outside of their price range. We've, by significantly increasing our outside demand of this grain, have taken part of the food culture away from another location. I was surprised when I found this out from a friend in an Environmental Studies college course. How To Cook Fluffy, Tasty Quinoa Cooking Lessons from The Kitchn |

Marrying a picky eater who is also a foodie is not as limiting, but still incredibly frustrating. Since part of my reason for cooking is relishing the look of bliss on my husband's face when he tries a new recipe (or a favorite one), I've given up trying to cook with foods he won't eat. As far as picky eaters go - he's actually flexible in that he enjoys food from many parts of the world - it's the ingredients themselves which pose the problem. I've seen this idea tossed around before for various cubbies in the living room etc. but I never thought to apply it to the kitchen. Not a fan of 'built-ins' but I love this idea since I wouldn't feel guilty if I wanted a new look and sheet rocked over it in a few years. Granola bars, granola bars, granola bars :) Even when I have to resort to the pre-packaged kind, there are still some nice options. Unlike the doughnut/muffin/cookie(ish) options - granola bars don't go all crumbly if you're walking and eating. Also, even though they still have a highish amount of sugar, they're also usually packed with fiber and nuts. This will take longer to digest, give you a good jolt of protein for long-term energy (instead of just a short-term sugar rush), and still satisfy a morning sweet tooth. When the weather is cool enough, I stash some in my car for those crazy mornings where there just isn't time for breakfast (or sometimes dinner). I'm always recommending this 'trick' to younger co-workers who complain of a lack of time for a snack/meal between school and work. Beyond Muffins: 8 New Ideas for a Handheld Breakfast |

As long as there's some sort of ventilation - even a downdraft ventilator - I'd say it would work for trendsetters. However, from a safety point, it would not be a good idea for a home with small children. For me, it's a no go. I'm an absentminded cook - I use cooking as an escape. The LAST thing I need is to set a bowl or paper down etc. from the other side of the counter and wind up with a fire. Set It Free: Ranges at the Kitchen Island |

Second kitchen - I LOVE the wallpaper. Since they only did one partial wall it doesn't overwhelm or seem as intimidating of a project. There is always the option of moving the plant inside the apartment now that it's full size (depending on whether it's a container grown plant or not - of course). If you put out a sign requesting other residents to refrain from picking the plant you lovingly tended and the theft continues - the thief has no remorse so there's no point to keeping it outside. I keep my plants near a floor lamp and they're happy. I've learned the hard way that thieves lurk everywhere - I even lost dirty socks when I left a laundry basket out for a few hours unattended (they left the other clothes). It's the one reason I'd want to go back to the 1950's...more respect for personal property. Help! What Do I Do About a Tomato Thief? Good Questions |

Just not digging it. Without the photos side by side it's hard to see the changes except for the stripes. At least now I know I'm definitely not a fan of stripes. I guess it reminds me of about a dozen rentals on a low budget where I wasn't allowed to paint so the only way to add color was furniture. If it works for them cool...but I'd find it very depressing when the weather outside turns grey and dreary. Before & After: Finishing Touches in an 80/20 Living Room The Color Cure |

@jane I'd be afraid of falling out too...but I had a lofted bed in college. It would be easy to add railings around the edge to reduce the chances. With railings my body adjusted to sleeping that way over time. The only other annoying thing is that there's no "safe" place for the little bedtime niceties like a cup of water or reading glasses since knocking it off with a pillow mid-sleep involves a loooong drop and broken things at the bottom. 5 Smart Studio Apartment Layouts |

@am_clarke Not sure of your layout but what works for me is a folding cart table. I only get it out when I'm planning on major cooking...but it gives lots of "counter" space for food prep. If that's too big try a smaller collapsible that would fit in a closet or under your bed. Another possibly useful option is a well-anchored shelf that acts as a holding area for whatever bowl/spice/veg you're not actively using at that point in cooking. A tiny fan to circulate air might help with the claustrophobic feeling...it tricks your body somewhat. good luck. 5 Smart Studio Apartment Layouts |

Lady 3 - not to mention that sometimes soda is the only alternative available to coffee. As a child (when I loathed soda because we never had it at home so the whole fizzy thing grossed me out) I can remember family parties and even Catholic Order of Forester parties where the only options were soda or coffee. The same sometimes holds true for vending machines. If you want a cold beverage to carry around...soda machines abound but water isn't always an option. I too learned the hard way that soap and water are useless. I knew not to touch my eyes but had no idea how badly my fingertips would burn. I'll keep this idea in the back of my mind in case I forget gloves - even though now I know better. I've also heard hold it by the stem while cutting so one's hand doesn't touch the cut flesh or seeds. Hot Pepper Hands: An Easy Way to Stop the Burn |
