If you do have ridiculous amounts of antiques and real furniture, I recommend hiring any reliable teenage boys you know.

My little brother spent countless hours helping one of my mom's friends move from a very large house. Great for her because he was cheaper (and arguably more reliable) than movers, and great for him because he was making more money than his regular job (and in cash).

Also, sell some of your crap first! Shouldn't moving be the time when you reconsider your "collection of 19th century mirrors"

I use a regular tupperware/rubbermade square container, but turned upside down - the lid becomes the plate and the container becomes the top. It's a little short for tall cakes though.

I also have a wicked awesome vintage tin cake carrier.

I might suggest that you find a comforter you like first and use that as part of your inspiration. In general, you should buy what comes in smaller variety (i.e. fabric before paint). You probably have greater possibilities for the art (either diy or bought) than the bedding.

I think its rude for guests to leave their shoes on or at least not ask. I certainly do that when I visit someone. They shouldn't have to clean up after me.

Default shoes off, only on if they INSIST they don't mind.

This is perfect. While I'm not banned from painting my rental, my bf has some strange aversion to colour (i.e. beige walls, white couch, brown carpet, wood furniture), so I've resigned myself to colourful accessories.

I'm being patient, I figure the longer we're together the more colour I'll be able to sneak in.

Your picture of a bed in stairs brings back baaaaaad memories of our last move.

Lesson learned: Always ALWAYS buy a split box spring.

Maybe I'm weird, but for me painting just isn't painting without that distinctive smell. Smells like "brand new" :)

I guess its the same thing as it on only smells clean if I can smell the pinesol.

I'm sure Its just reminiscent scents of childhood. I know I'm not supposed to say it but up with chemicals!

I find that many of our veggies from the CSA do store better in plastic bags. But I have tried to get into the habit of rinsing and drying them. They don't last forever, but I can usually get 4-5 uses.

While they're not quite doughnuts, I really like Rosettes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosette_(cookie)

While they don't have a long shelf life, and require a unitasking timbale iron (http://www.amazon.com/Nordic-Ware-Swedish-Rosettes-Timbales/dp/B00004RFPJ), they are delicious and light.

I do a clean out every few months using the method my mom taught me:

Fill one sink or bucket half full with warm soapy water

Working top to bottom empty EVERYTHING off each shelf/drawer, wipe down the shelf/drawer, and put everything that's still good back, wiping it down as you go.

I like this because it forces to look and touch everything and every shelf.

As mentioned IN THE RECIPE you can make buttermilk by adding lemon juice to milk and letting it sit for 10 min (I use 1 tbsp for every cup of milk).

I tried this biscuit recipe tonight and I love it! It eliminates most of the mess usually associated with biscuits. I made two changes however: 1) I added the milk right into the food processor and pulsed a few times to bring it together. 2) I dumped the whole thing right into the parchment lined pan and patted it out even with floured hands. I made the cuts in the pan. Worked out just fine and dandy.

Thanks Sarah Rae, this recipe is definitely going to become a staple.

Wasn't completely right in my description, but here's the link. That lip might cause a bit of a problem for small crumbs, flour, etc.

I actually like this, but the best idea I've seen is a garbage hole (from Richeleau I think - they distribute cabinets and fittings). You literally drill a hole about 3-4" diameter into your counter and fit it with this black plastic cover. It's located over wherever your compost bin or garbage is installed, so you just sweep everything into the hole!

I haven't seen it in action, but it seem ingenious.

My mom and I usually make Nanaimo Bars as part of our annual christmas baking. It didn't occur to me for a long time that they were only made in Canada - perhaps because the ingredients are anything but native to Canada.

I don't have our recipe on hand so I'm not sure how it compares, but for me the only true Nanaimo Bars are minty Nanaimo Bars (just what I'm used to). The filling is mint flavour and mint coloured - note the correct spelling of flavour and colour :P

Lee Valley has lots of great goodies. And they're Canadian eh!
I got their kitchen calculator for Christmas (highly recommended), and I got my mom the quad timer, which is awesome for big, complicated dinners (if you remember to set the timer at all!).

I've just tried this a little. Its a great idea and seems to work well. Except when they don't have your book indexed. What's the point if you can't search ALL your cookbooks at once? There are also some of mine Canadian cookbooks they don't have listed at all (i.e. most Canadian Living books). Because of this, I likely won't subscribe after my free trial is up.

Now that I'm thinking of this, someone needs to produce a definitive guide on vegetable storage (printable PDF to stick on the fridge). I'm constantly forgetting how to store what!

I really like the design of this. Looks like it'd be pretty easy to make yourself.

I have also heard about keeping potatoes and onions separate, and that traditional types of bins aren't good (i.e. like this one http://www.grampasworkshop.net/potbin.html)

Also, I've heard that its best to keep potatoes as dark as possible, which this box doesn't do (http://www.potatoesnb.com/consumers/faqs.asp#15).
