A Nigella cake recipe called for lining the tin with clingwrap. I had memories of my stepdad heating dinner in the oven without removing the clingwrap (with disastrous results), so I was very apprehensive about following her instructions. In the end I decided to follow the recipe, but the Melted Plastic Cake that resulted has forever ruined my trust in Nigella Lawson.

I just painted our kitchen a similar colour. Good to see someone else has done it as well :)

bad fruitcake can put you off for life. yuck. i hate that candied "fruit".

i use a nigella lawson recipe from Feast - Chocolate Fruit Cake. so moist and dark and full of fruit, but so so rich. definitely a once-a-year cake.

yes! my kitchen looks a lot like that during photo at the moment (even the cabinet colour). we have stuff everywhere, but we're expecting to have the kitchen functional tomorrow.
we've been, uh, treating ourselves to a few nice meals out. and also using the microwave/convection oven and electric frypan.
for dishes it's been a washing up tub in the laundry sink. ugh.

Joan A. - Can't you sift over a bowl and then measure?

I've never thought to use a whisk. I don't know if I'd be able to trust it - I'd be too scared of stray lumps finding their way in. Especially with baking soda.

I use a wire mesh sieve. I had a flour sifter once and it completely fell apart. Never bothered since - the sieve works fine and won't break unless I really try!

Except once, working in a kitchen I cut myself on a broken sieve.

I have, I love them and always have a jar in the pantry/fridge. I use the syrup in baking as well, like in the filling for macarons.

definitely. i love putting on a pot of cider in winter and adding cloves, cinnamon, allspice and apple slices (fresh or canned).

also, mead. mulled mead is a must-have winter drink. it took ages to find it in australia, but it was worth it.

silver is far superior! gold has a tendency to become tacky, unless done really sympathetically.

i hate my bathroom/toilet situation. we have a WC at one end of the house that has no sink, and the (tiny) bathroom at the other end of the house. the (also tiny) laundry is next to the WC, so there's a towel rack and soap/handwash in there for handwashing. the sink has no bench and i don't particularly like guests being in my laundry.

any suggestions?

actually, this would be a good idea for my massive bulk roll of cling wrap. could also be used for other things-on-rolls like baking paper, tin foil or trash bags.

I can't believe I never thought of putting mats under the bowls! What type of mat would be best for metal bowls on tile floors?

I have two cats that pull food out of their bowls. I'll switch to wider bowls, thanks for that advice.
