I have been an interior decorating consultant or "interior stylist" for nine years now. My business began with my obsession for design and my friends' requests for advice. Before long, I was working with a long string of clients who needed just a little design assistance. Most of these people were intimidated by working with an interior designer and terrified that they would be forced to spend large sums of money on things they didn't really want or need.

It turns out there is a need for down-to-earth consultants who can be a sounding board, offer new ideas and resources, and give a fresh point of view on a reasonable budget. The down side is that I don't always see the finished results because clients sometimes take years to finish a project. However, I am often rewarded with such relief and gratitude from clients who are delighted to be empowered to create a home they love.

So yes, there is a need for for affordable decorating assistance for the majority. And there is a very special shiny place for high end interior designers to complete an entire design scheme fit for glossy magazines. So go find some paid deco help or gang up with some creative friends and make something happen.

Pi --
You could do a collage or "tile like" design using paint chips. They're free and you can replace them anytime. Just attach them to heavy paper and frame in an Ikea frame.
Another option is to use some of the newer, artsy vinyl wall decals. They are also fairly inexpensive, removable and can cover a large area depending on how you arrange them!

Are you from Texas and just tired of Austin? If you want brag about other TX attractions, go right ahead. This post is meant to be a helpful travel guide for visitors to TX, specifically Austin.
I personally prefer Austin over the other major TX cities, but I also think there are some wonderful hidden gems in smaller TX towns. There is so much to see in TX and so much diversity from region to region. If you are from here you'll know what I mean (ex:West TX is a whole other state than East TX).

This is a link to Coastal Living that shows some sea-glass paint colors: http://www.coastalliving.com/homes/decorating/color-it-coastal-seaglass-00400000046158/page18.html

I have a few more suggestions: Covington Blue by Benjamin Moore is always a great color, Martha Stewart at Home Depot has a color actually called Sea Glass (the Opal Silk and Yucca Plant are nice too), Tame Teal from Sherwin Williams is brighter while Tidewater is more muted.

Once again this is a case of "to each his own". If you like beach relics, bring a few into your room. If you prefer a coastal influence, borrow the colors and textures.
Pictures 2, 4, and 8 are examples of a more subtle approach to beach style without the shells, signs, etc.

I agree with bthughes.
You have to be in the house to truly appreciate the architecture and the light of the space. It is gorgeous and it is no where near my price bracket or reality either. But it will be appealing to some person with enough money to spend on a "vacation home" -- not an everyday home -- so some beachy decor is totally appropriate and desired.
And anyone else who has been to Port Aransas will understand why this house stands out as being exceptional.

Nope, Fellow Texan, I am not related to Red Adair. In fact, I am not related to any Adairs in the USA as my husband's family moved here directly from Scotland. But people ask that all the time.

Those plastic straws seem to be very seasonal. I have seen them at Crate and Barrel and Target as well -- but you have to catch them at the right time!

Well, the entire house is amazing in person so the overall effect left me "awestruck". We hope to feature a house tour soon. But honestly, I think I am just a big design nerd, because I kept thinking about that driftwood screen for hours.

Thanks, Anita83. Of course it is totally fine to NOT do any of the suggestions and just have a games free for all. But we try to provide ideas for people who like to prep for a party and do a little extra. We love a game night no matter how it's done!

I adore blue ceilings and have painted many. One of my favorite tints for ceilings is Topsail blue by Sherwin Williams. It's on the gray/blue side and very subtle so it goes with just about everything.

akay: I agree with your comment regarding how much people have to say about a mundane topic like laundry! Who knew it would spark such interest?

The thing is, we all have to deal with it no matter how mundane it is. Therefore, we all have an opinion on how to do it. The trick is finding a solution that makes your life easier and removes a little stress.

I happen to have the problem that smellofsawdust mentioned where the laundry piles seem to migrate down the hallway. My laundry room is tiny so when I sort I have piles everywhere and it can take me days to get through laundry for 4 people. I still don't have a great system so I am open to suggestions!

Monica: We are taking the puppies out as often as we can, but it just isn't enough. Our house can get a bit distracting with two pups and two kids, so we must not hit the timing right all the time. I am about to go shop for a new timer to remind us!

Also, I will say that the potty training ability varies quite a bit among breeds. Our fist dog, Lucy, was is an obsessive compulsive lab/chow (the one who sheds alot) and she potty trained in two days. Weenie dogs are known for taking a long time to train :(

seanswim7: The fan in first photo is a vintage Hunter, I believe. I will be featuring Texas Ceiling fans as a store post on Thursday and they are the ones that restore antique fans. In person, these old fan are totally beautiful. Hunter makes reproductions.

kimg924: Yes, you are right. Not all the fans at Home Depot or Lowes that are from Hunter are of lesser quality, but some are. You get what you pay for so just be aware that not all Hunters will be the same.

Great thought for a post, Abby. I love the idea of mindfulness before attacking a project with too many sticky labels and good intentions, but not enough insight into our habits. I tend to jump into my organization full of zeal and then later realize that the system did not work. Scratch that and try again. I am learning to be more thoughtful though.
A great book for this is "Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui" by Karen Kingston.

As for the edger tools, I know it's controversial. I personally like them because it is neat and quick. I usually have to go back with a small brush and touch up some of the edges because the results are not perfect.

But I do agree, that as a purist you should only cut in using nice angled brushes. I just don't always feel like being a purist!

fledgling: When choosing the right type of paint, I would suggest talking the staff at the paint store. I usually go to a actual paint shop (like Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore) rather than Home Depot because the staff gives you more attention. Also, I learned that the color mixing machines are not frequently recalibrated at the the big box stores, so colors can be slightly off.

In general, you can use latex paint for most purposes. If the walls have a glossier paint on them you might want to use a bonding primer first. If the walls or trim have oil based paint, you have to use oil based over it OR sand/prime before using latex over it. Try to stick with latex and low VOC if you can -- you will make your life easier.

Jennaelliott -- We mixed kitty litter into the paint to dry it out, based on suggestions from on-line resources. If you have to throw your paint away in the garbage, they will not pick up wet paint or paint cans with the lids on. Honestly, that was the first time we ever bought kitty litter since we don't even have a cat!

About recycling the colored paint to make beige. . . that is what the worker at the HHW facility told me. I watched him dump random colors in one big bucket and somehow they all blended to a beige. To be fair, probably most of the non-white paint colors they receive are probably neutral anyway. I don't imagine they get alot of really bright colors and when they do the the off one, it probably gets lost in the sea of beige.

I just thought it was interesting that they only make white or beige paint, because I assumed there would be other weird colors too!
