Finding a decent local pub is vital, one where you feel welcome and like you fit into the community there. Also I always join the local hockey club which gets me out and is social as well as exercise. Knowing where to walk the dog is helpful too!

What Makes You Feel at Home in a
New City?

4/16/13 6:56 AM

My MiL insists on no bins in any bathroom. I hate it! I have bins everywhere, with lids, I make sure there is extra paper and pain killers and all sorts of stuff you might want but I don't provide hotel type shampoo etc, I just leave a large one out so people can grab a bit if they want. I put away tooth brushes and razors though. Too personal. We have some art - a photo we printed and a plant. Helps to make the place look more lived in.

I dislike bathrooms without sensible locks, and also those which are off living spaces. One friend had a bathroom straight off the living room so when there was a crowd you had to enter and exit in full view. Ugh.

We are rubbish at quick dinners, even reheating and cooking rice/veg seems to take us an hour.

What do people prep at the weekends in advance? I don't understand. Veggies must dry out, don't they? And what else can one do? Can pasta be reheated (but fresh only takes 4 mins anyway). I know rice isn't safe after a day or so. And I never understand what people do with a weeks worth of roasted vegetables. Sigh. I don't work so mostly I cook in the daytimes and it lasts a few days or gets frozen for quick meals or we cook in the eve and it takes probably an hour.

Weird question. I get dressed every morning properly and thus I walk my dogs in real clothes. They need 2-2.5 hours a day so it's a major part of my day and not quick. They don't run my schedule, they go out when I take them because they are well trained and do not need to go out at odd times or urgently unless they are unwell. We do have a fenced garden because I would never live anywhere which didn't with a dog as it is unfair to them, in my opinion. I have never seen anyone walking in pyjamas. It's wellies and waterproofs at this time of year in the UK.

Hmm, I have never tried it raw. Maybe in the summer. I love Russian Kale, and curly kale is ok. The greener, tougher stuff is less to my taste but when it's in season, that's what we eat! We get various types at the Farmers Market and its all local and fresh so it's pretty good. We just boil it and add a little butter.

I love your desk! Where did it come from? I need something fun and functional like that, hopefully available in the UK!

Good work!

Yep, we have a window cleaner too, although ours only comes every 8 weeks and costs a bit more than that since we have a lot of sliding doors and high roof lights to get at. Well worth it though, and I am looking forward to his next visit which should be soon.

3 No-Cost Ways I'm Refreshing My Home for the New Year

I'm lucky enough to live in Bath, UK which is a World Heritage Site and protected accordingly. We have fairly strict planning laws which is great. We recently doubled the size of our house but because we kept it all in keeping with the neighbourhood, it was approved without issue. It's perfectly possible to extend without making things look awful, and without upsetting your neighbours! Our house is vastly better now without its flat roofed extension and with new gates and so on.

Depends on what I feel like making. We rarely eat until 9pm and I'm home most of the day so sometimes I cook stuff in the afternoon which we then heat up, like spag Bol, or chilli or whatever. Sometimes we have really quick pasta dishes, and sometimes its easy stuff like sausage and chips :-) I like to cook but I don't like to cook that late as I'm really tired by then so this way I can enjoy cooking, and just heat it up later.

How Much Time Do You Usually Have To Get Dinner on the Table?

We live in Bath in the UK. It's perfect. Small enough to be able to get to green space in just a few mins but large enough to have loads of restaurants and bars and gigs and so on. There are food festivals all the time. If we want more, we have Bristol just 12 mins by train. I wouldn't want to live out in a village as I love being able to walk to town for food and drinks any time. I wouldn't want to live in a bigger city though.

Are You Making The Most Of Your City?

I'm afraid to say we often take our dog to the market but we do make sure we go early so it's not too busy. It's really good for her socialisation and she never causes any trouble. If its a hot day she can't always have a long walk but being highly stimulated at the market wears her out.

I find people who take the supermarket shopping trolleys around the market extremely rude. They are too big and unwieldy.

I will have a whole new kitchen and pantry in about six weeks so I cannot wait to organise them and make use of all the new space :-)

Plus I want to try baking bread again (and not end up with a hockey puck!), learn to make macaroons and use more interesting ingredients in my daily meals.

We have two guys come over for just a hour a week and they do the kitchen, bathroom and hoover everywhere plus a bit of dusting. It's so worthwhile and costs us (I think) £12 person/hour so maybe ~£100 a month.

We have to tidy up for them so they can do a good job, and allows me to concentrate on keeping things tidy and getting laundry done and so on.

Having lived with small rental kitchens for 2 years, I can't wait to move back into our house where the kitchen will be aboout 300sq ft but that includes the dining area. There will be maybe 11m of counter top! Cannot wait!

Can a Kitchen Be Too Big?

In the UK, many of the spaces at the front of the house (few people have actual lawns there) are now parking spaces. Ours will be much the same soon which is a shame but necessary.

When we lived by the river in Cambridge, we sat in our front garden a lot and drank wine and watched the world go past. I loved it and really miss it now that we have moved to a cul-de-sac, although we still chat to neighbours at the front when we see them.

The Case Against the American Front Lawn

About 8 years ago we redid our 300sqft kitchen totally including new sub-floor (due to a leak), granite worktops etc and appliances for about £25-30k.

We're about to put in a similar sized kitchen (different house) to a new-build extension which I think will cost us about £15-20k as we're trying to cut costs a little more this time.

We assign our annual leave to always be used for 'holidays' (away from home) since staying at home always feels like a waste, but recently I have taken a few days at random times, and it's so nice to have a free day. I've since extended that to have every Friday off, and I love it! Of course, I always have chores and things to do, but I can at least plan my own day :-)

I can't imagine living in the USA and not taking every single leave day I was entitled to. We get 25 days and it's never enough.

Our cul-de-sac is really friendly and open and I love it. I've had summer days when I have spoken to about 60% of the people just by being around and about my garden. While we're renovating we have moved out, and I really miss it! When we go to check on the house we always chat to someone or other about it.

Two houses sold recently, and I'm so pleased that the new neighbours are both friendly and chatty so hopefully the feeling will continue.

Do You Know Your Neighbors?

My GF just puts stuff down anywhere and then complains when I put it 'away' since she can't find it, despite me explaining that things cannot live on surfaces! Drives me potty.

I, apparently, don't empty the dishwasher gunk collecting thing at the bottom enough. This is what she ALWAYS brings up whenever I complain about anything at all....
