The one time I used movers, they showed up and took one look at my stuff and left. To be fair, I did have two bedrooms worth of stuff crammed into a one bedroom with a ton of plants and outdoor patio furniture.

I just suggest getting a quote from a place that actually comes to see your place before you commit if you have lots of stairs.

Actually, this might be a good place to ask my question. How much can you change the color of a wooden dresser by adding a wax paste to it? Or will this just give it a shinier finish?

I'm getting an oak dresser that never got varnished well from the looks of it, so the whole thing is kind of a dull greyed out oak that has almost completely lost its shine. I might do nothing to it, but I have toyed with the idea of refinishing it.

I love the bones, but my bedroom already has several dressers and the only repeating wood color is the light reddish cherry wood of the head board and dresser that matches it. Is there anything I can do to it that would allow me to change it later when we finally figure out what furniture is going to go where when we get into a bigger place with a guest room?

I don't have pictures now but will by this weekend.

Don't "fire proof" safes just incinerate your stuff?

If he is going to stay and you are going to let him smoke, raise his rent. He agreed not to smoke inside when he moved in and it is reducing your quality of life.

Personally, I would throw him out. Maybe do a craigslist search and see if there seems to be demand for sublets.

sigh, at the risk of sounding like a second grade version of myself, i don't think you can go wrong with horses in art.

I'm in love with these huge, colorful and slightly abstract horse paintings from Katie Upton. They are the size of my sofa and way out of my price range :( http://www.katieupton.com/

But I got my mom a print or glicee (sp?) a few years ago, and it's gorgeous.

Not clear whether you are on the lease or if you just moved in. I would be careful regarding that if you are in a rent controlled building.

I feel like I had it so easy. My boyfriend and I moved in together over five years ago, and while he initially said he wanted a house furnished like the video game Myst, because we inherited most of our furniture that has not come to pass. He's been really cool about letting me do whatever, though he was disappointed that our cool coffee table (aqua antique chinese water bucket with glass top--killer craigslist find) didn't lend itself to putting the feet up.

He got an xbox storage ottoman/coffee table for Christmas and when he opened it, his first comment was "but you get so many compliments on that coffee table." It's our new end table, and he gets to put his feet up on the other--with all of his games neatly stored inside.

My family spent a Christmas in Germany one year when I was an exchange student, and when the Christmas market shut down on the evening of the 23rd, we gathered up some evergreen pieces that were destined for the heap and bundled them together to build a little upside down tree that we hung from a rafter in the loft we were staying in. I had made some ornaments and brought them along, and we decorated our little tree. It was memorable, and super eco friendly, and it looked just like a small tree!
