I'm sorry, this has nothing to do with anything, but can I ask about the use of the term "powder room" for bathroom? Is it a regionalism? I notice it's all over the "Not So Big House" books and it scans as fussily euphemistic to me, but for all I know, it's What People Say in some places.

MosiacWench, last year I shipped cookies to a handful of people I hadn't been in touch with as much as I liked or who I knew were going through a tough time. I got so many thank-yous and nice feedback! So, save the homemade cookies for those who appreciate them, I'm sure someone in your circle will.

I think you may be overthinking this a bit. Save some energy for worrying about how to have turkey and side dishes ready at the same time. :)

We've always gotten deposits back. We're very good at cleaning and we've always been willing to push to get a deposit back.

Sunset, I wouldn't be shy about pushing to get your $120.00 back. What about small claims court? I'd give him one last chance by registered letter to do the right thing and then pursue it legally.

The Texas one doesn't sit right with me. It strikes me as making light of conflicts that are still very much on some peoples' minds.

As one who worships in the ways of the ancient Egyptians, I think the house cats should be given greater prominence in these photos. They are after all, living representations of the goddess Bast.

If I tried to decorate this way, it would be one massive dust trap and mess. Well done.

On the subject of religious paintings in the bathroom, I have believer relatives who have no compunctions about putting up pictures of Jesus and Mary and inspirational texts wherever those items will fit. Including bathrooms.

As for non-believers appreciating mass market religious pictures as funky images, I don't see the sentiment as appreciably different from a non-believer looking at the ceiling of the Sistine chapel and appreciating it as a work of art.

I find obsessively keeping butter chilled makes a big difference in recipes that require chilled butter.

This means, if I get interrupted and need to put the bowl down, I put the bowl in the fridge. If I find I'm taking too long to cut it in the butter, I put the bowl in the fridge and go back to it when it's chilled. If I don't quite understand what I'm doing next and need to refer to the recipe, I put the bowl in the fridge. You get the idea. It makes all the difference in pastry, biscuits, etc.

Kiley, as a fellow Cape Codder, you have greatly inspired me. And yes, I'd love to see more of this house.

Kind of related, we had people become concerned that we weren't using the designated master bedroom in our townhouse as our bedroom but were using it as an office. Well the extra space was nice in an office space and the non-master bedroom had plenty of space and was quieter. Some people were OBSESSED with this and we had to remind them that this was not in fact their townhouse.

I don't know about you but whenever I have concerns about product safety I turn to the public interest group with the most at stake: parents.

Christ, that's all we need. There's always someone screaming about the dangers to their Snotleigh. And I'm saying that as a parent.

I used to think I hated beer, but it turns out I just hate Pilsners (they always taste thin and unpleasant to me) and modern IPA's (nooo, not the hops again!).

That said, unless someone has indicated some interest in having their horizons expanded, leave the non-beer drinkers alone.

I don't get it. A slightly dull painting that at least had some meaning once upon a time becomes a piece of generic vaguely fascist art.

Just had a bad cold with the baby. There were a a couple of days where I stuck her in the bouncy chair, watched TV and waved at her from the couch. I also spent a lot of quality time lying next to her on the bed (we have a very firm futon bed) and engaging with her in a very low key way.

I'm with Polly S., it's a toilet. It doesn't need to be clean enough to eat off of.

I use a earthy crunchy citrus cleaner, a sponge and bare hands. And I figure if washing my hands is okay after using the toilet, it's okay after cleaning the toilet. I do cut the corner off the sponge and segregate it so it's not used for any other purpose.

More love for the bed here. I have a friend whose mother is a fairly hardcore astrologer but not a devotee of the hippie aesthetic, these charts would be perfect for her.
