You could put a sofa under the windows, and the TV on the wall opposite. That will create a cosy seating area that does not interfere with the walking paths across this room.

Please get these tables assessed before you refinish them. That veneer inlay and those carvings are not cheap work. If you don't like them, sell them and buy something that you do like.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is a boudoir.

Other than that, think of what hobbies do you have that would be nice to separate from the living area downstairs. Watching TV? Reading books? Gaming on consoles/ PC/ tabletop? Quilting/ sewing/ embroidery/ knitting/ spinning/ crochet/ bookbinding etc. Collecting? Playing music? Training/ weights/ yoga? Painting? Or any combination of the above?

If you have such a hobby, it is a prime candidate for it's own room. I would dearly love a crafting room and my ex would have made it into a tabletop RPG room.

Never again. I've moved in twice to a home that I knew I would be miserable in and I was right. Neither relationship lasted and since their homes did show an aspect of their personalities, I should have listened to that little voice that said 'this won't work out'.

If you have another room to show as a bedroom, stage this as a library with a daybed or an office with a reading nook. I really like the café idea as well.

Please do not put up any walls or curtains, it would only create two awkward narrow spaces and take away from the old character of the house.

Turquoise goes very well with the brown you have: http://www.flickr.com/photos/citikas/5672187654/

So does spring green: http://www.flickr.com/photos/citikas/5672187308/

The most practical solution for you would be to use your rug as the palette for colours. For example, throw pillows the same colour as the background and coffee table the same colour as the vines and leaves, or vice versa.

What do you do with your old t-shirts? I cut them into rags of various sizes and use them instead of paper towels. They work beautifully for wiping the kitchen messes and for pet messes too.

I gave up cooking very fatty foods for health reasons, but letting the fat congeal in the pan and scraping it off was my method of choice before. I tried to wipe it off with a paper towel once out of curiosity at my parents' place and that left horrible amount of paper lint in the pan.

I love black and have added some to my 'bedroom' corner of my studio flat: http://www.flickr.com/photos/citikas/sets/72157623173229270/

The photos were taken during night time without flash, so the colours are not true black/white like in real life.

Where are these glass canisters from? I love the look and I've been looking for jars like these for a year now.
