I should have added, in my own NYC place I've been living with a ancient kitchenette. After a few years I got tired of the constant bending the tiny fridge required. I bought a slim tall ConServ and LOVE it. Good affordable markets are not close by, so shopping daily for fresh food sadly is not an option. I love having a decent freezer for popsicles! ;)

Our friend in Ireland has a tiny fridge but it's elevated to a comfortable height by a short cabinet underneath. Another cabinet above creates a nice streamlined look. This tall fridge/cabinet combo is at one end of the kitchen. The counter, stove & sink take up the rest of the wall space. Efficient and pleasing to look at. But I would admittedly be frustrated by the tiny freezer.

After finding pipes in the wall (thanks to a flood from above) I'll be creating a new kitchen and turning the current old kitchenette into a laundry closet. A huge bonus for my lil' NYC studio.
Still not sure if I want stackable, side-by-side or even an all-in-one machine. I sure hope there are some smaller models to choose from - lately the machines all seem to be enormous!

My favorite towel has surprisingly turned out to be a beach towel. Not one of those velour things (ugh)... it's thin soft terry and wicked absorbent. Some bath towels can be *too* thick - hard to handle and bad for drying off. So I don't go for scratchy; softer & thinner is my winner.

I think this is a message loud & clear to American publishers. What I find so appealing about Living Etc. is not just the quality of its content but also the quantity of it. I always feel like I got my money's worth (even at that high price) because there's page after page of fresh ideas. Nothing cold or modern but also nothing fussy and old-fashioned.

I've subscribed to ELLE Decor and Met Home in the past. It only took a matter of minutes to flip through and read them. Rarely tore any pages out to keep. Straight into the recycling bin. But there's several issues of Domino, Blueprint, ReadyMade and Living Etc. on a shelf. Living in a tiny apartment, these mags were worth taking up precious space. I really hope we see a strong contender emerge in the near future, despite the tough times in publishing. One of life's little pleasures is curling up in a comfy chair (train, plane, etc.) with your favorite magazine, not balancing a laptop trying to reading a shelter website.

It's a sad loss. I was about to send in the check... oh well. I really *want* to like Met Home but it leaves me a bit cold. ReadyMade is really good but obviously not for everyone. I adore Living Etc. but paying 8 or 9 bucks a pop for a British magazine that shows items I can't always get here in the U.S. isn't ideal.

It would be great if they'd put a Domino section in the back of Lucky. Well, one can dream...

That looks like it came from Smart Furniture (smartfurniture.com) I have the same thing in black, but larger. What's great about these is the assembly: no nails or hardware - the pieces slot together and are very sturdy. You can create your own custom case online and they'll ship you the parts. I find it accommodates most books, but not oversized ones.

"The Holiday" has an amazing English stone cottage... so cozy. I could just curl up in it for the entire winter.

This puts me in the mood to watch it now...

I was home on Thompson Street, up unusually early. The towers were the view from my ground-floor doorstep. I had just returned from Ireland and was unpacking; the video camera caught much of it.
As the morning unfolded I put my little TV facing out of the window so we could all follow the news reports and understand what was happening before our eyes. Cell phones started to fail - I was handing my cordless phone to whoever needed it. That's one reason I'll never give up my land line. And then the following days of sirens combined with eerie silence, the ashes settling on our building and the unforgettable smell of burning.

Thanks Miaues! I ended up going with NYCityVan. They just left a few minutes ago and I was so pleased. They were efficient and friendly - and insured! I would totally recommend them. I found their ad on Craigslist and saw they had been recommended by NY Mag so it seemed pretty safe. $110 to transport a heavy stell & glass table and a bicycle.

Hi All-
Been a while since I posted. Does anyone know of a good "man with a van" service for Manhattan? I have to move a rather large glass & steel Room & Board table from Chinatown to Soho by the end of the week. I'm a bit leery of just calling up anyone from an ad so if you have a recommendation I'd love to hear it.

thanks!
Trish

I live in a ground floor co-op on Thompson St. No garden - my neighbor has access to the small patch of concrete -but I appreciate not having to haul things up many flights. And being able to wheel the bike right out the door is wonderful. Drawbacks: there IS noise on summer weekend nights; I dread it when NYU kids are back. And a lot of black dust from passing traffic has me resigned to keeping the windows closed almost 24/7. There's a rental apartment below so I can't stomp around. I do enjoy seeing people go by, since I work at home it's a wee bit less isolating.
Oh and when you're getting something heavy delivered (i.e. furniture) the look of relief on the hauler's face is priceless. No stairs!

I have a similar mirror, albeit smaller, that was also the same bronze color. I found some lovely paint in a champagne/silver color...(I guess that would be platinum?)
It's a very soft patina and not too shiny. It coexists beautifully with the more modern pieces in my home and surprisingly looks as if it was always that color.

I live street-level so one of the new trees is actually right outside my window. It gives me mixed feelings because as it grows, the roots could potentially compromise a retaining wall for the basement apartments. Neighboring trees have become a haven for rats, who tunnel and scamper about nightly. We had a generous amount of trees on our block already (I love nature!) I would have just preferred they tackle the rat issue first. I dread the night when I come home to find a rat darting under the new tree. On the positive side, I welcome anything that will help produce fresh oxygen and improve air quality.

And who can sleep knowing your upstairs neighbor can peer down right at you? Sleeping under the stars may work in a different location, but this was a bizarre plan for such close quarters. I doubt a co-op board would even consider the idea.
