The use of space here is amazing! Not an inch is wasted yet it doesn't appear overcrowded- well done!

While I see where a lot of comments about painting the walls grey and cabinets white are coming from (i.e. making the space more contemporary.) I fear that this fix would come across as a design cover-up and look somewhat cheap. I think the kitchen should work with what it has. The cabinets are in good shape as is the chrome. The pale blue color of the counter is not optimal but can definitely be tied in w/ wallpaper. I believe this kitchen can be made to be very Madmen 50's cool. I would wallpaper the walls plaid (possibly using brown, tan, and pale blue colors.) I'd keep the cabinets the same. A few nicknacks (cook books, cutting boards, cookie jars) can be used to downplay the counter's dominance in the room as well. So I say go for it and make the kitchen 50's Madmen cool- it will still work even if the rest of the house is styled either modern or classic.
