I'm from Finland and my relatives live near the Arctic Circle. Reindeer meat is standard food up there and the animals roam free and and eat lichen - they have much better lives than the cows here in the US! I see the skins used mostly as decoration or outdoors when it's really cold; they are warm but tend to shed and can't take too much abuse.
