I loved my open shelving. I cooked for 6-8 people and the dishes kept on the shelves were used in 1-2 days at the latest. A stack of white plates, mixing bowls, ,cereal bowls and glasses, rolling pin and Kitchen aid were in the main part of the kitchen. The rest in a fantastic pantry. This system kept me from accumulating so much "stuff" and it was nice to see the things I loved (I made sure I did since I saw them constantly), I would do it again. I did this in a 3200 square foot house and I had less than 10 linear feet of dishes/supplies on shelving. Now I have doors and I don't see, love, or use half of it.
