We did it mostly ourselves with the help of some great friends. We used solid wood, milk paints and tung oil for the cabinets, nothing toxic. It is efficient, has everything we need and we have fed up to 50 people out of it.
One challenge you overcame in your small kitchen, or a good resource you've found.
When we bought our house everything was rotted and disgusting (see the before photo). We gutted everything and started over. We did it all in the evenings after work and on the weekends. A true labor of love.

Looks so great! I especially love the windows below the cabinets, one of my fave features in any kitchen! I also really like the cabinet doors and wood floors. Great job!

This is so gorgeous and so not AT commentary styled.
Yeah!

What a beautiful, functional kitchen. I love the hidden away shelves with the micro by the fridge. It doesn't look like it's there til you turn the corner.

It's so warm and welcoming. I could see this even in the snowy midwest where I live. Can almost smell curry and coffee... Nicely done!

So charming and beautiful, love it! Do plants do well by those two little windows in the corner? Those are my favorite feature! Gorgeous!

This is such a great kitchen. Jana & Peter, can you tell us what those countertops are made of? And if you can share where you got that awesome sink, I would love to know!
view deelw's profile
Hi deelw. The countertops are concrete. I forget where we bought the sink from (somewhere on-line) but it's made by Elkay. It was my big splurge, I really wanted a sink with two drainboards. I do all my cutting on the right and usually have a draining rack on the left. It's easy to keep clean and super efficient.

simply amazing!!!!

Thanks, Jana & Peter! I've been looking for a sink like yours - I bet it was worth the splurge :)

I would love to have this as my own kitchen! Warm, inviting, efficient, and what an AMAZING transformation! The color pallet is perfect!

Lovely! Where did you get that table?
view js13's profile
We got the table from Crawfords in Santa Cruz. It's an antique-ish store. They restore old furniture from Pennsylvania. One of our favorite spots!

It's so homey. I love the corner windows under the cabinets.

As an interior designer I appreciate all the effort that went into your kitchen. Usually I'm not one for painted cabinetry but this is quite stunning. My only dislike would be the window frames left unpainted. By painting them white to blend in with your backsplash - your eye would go straight to the outside - rather than stopping by the wood surrounding it - it would give a more spacious and open feel at the corner - but love the windows under the cabinetry!!!! Great work

I love this one and I thought it looked familiar. It finally dawned on me now that it is a prettier version of the kitchen from the show "Friends".
It is gorgeous!

Way cooler than those other kitchens!

I love that you kept a wood floor and have a carpet down--both features that often bring forth cries of impracticality. As long as you treat the materials with common sense and don't expect everything to stay pristine, you can enjoy these beautiful materials in your kitchen.
The cabinet pulls seem a little too glitzy for the feel of the rest of the space, but otherwise, wow!

This kitchen is warmth, love and kindness. Applauds and congratulations! beautiful job. All the hard work really shows, very inspiring

Oh My Goodness! I love this. Good job Peter and Jana!!!

love how this feels, warm and comforting and usable. If some sauce splatters it won't ruin any design lines or color palette before its cleaned up. This looks lived in and real and the kind of kitchen you would turn the corner and go AH! how wonderful :)

Gosh, this is so awesome! I love the cabinets, the banquet, the table, the ceiling, and the pops of orange. Brilliant transformation. Having renovated a kitchen, doing the work ourselves, I can tell how much effort and thought went into this. Very much deserving of the prize!

Ooh, where did you find your sink? I'm looking for a sink/drainboard combo to fit into an a existing granite counter, but I'm having some troubles finding the right size!
view aewurster's profile
Nevermind...just read your earlier post on the sink.

Awwwww...what a kitchen and dining area. Love it! This is the ONE. The kind of kitchen I would like to have someday - cozy, functional, and compact. Good job! Congrats!

Beautiful and cozy kitchen. So many great features, but I love the banquette, which I am dying for. Great job with the eco-friendly nature of the kitchen also!

Definitely my dream kitchen! A few questions if you don't mind sharing:
1. what is the paint color used for the cabinets?
2. where do you get the backsplash?
3. where do you get the gas stove?
Again, an awesome labor of love!

Really well done. I love the integrated bookshelf in the front of your kitchen peninsula and the way it seamlessly transitions into the banquette. Well done!
