Jana & Peter's Labor of Love Remodeled Kitchen

When Peter and Jana bought a small cottage in Scotts Valley, California, they knew it was going to need a lot of work. If you look at the Before photo of their kitchen, you will see what a mess it was — rotting wood and buckled linoleum. They labored through evenings and the weekends to craft a fresh space from the old, gutting the entire home down to the studs and building it back up. Their space is truly a labor of love, created by hand with the help of family and friends.

The kitchen is made of solid wood, finished with milk paints and tung oil for the cabinets -- old-fashioned and non-toxic. Peter and Jana say that they've fed 50 people at a time out of this small, efficient kitchen. It works hard, and it's beautiful too.

Jenn's Smart and Cheap Toronto Kitchen

Jenn lives in Toronto, and she shares the kitchen with her two young daughters. The funny thing about Jenn's kitchen is that it is actually a temporary design solution — she is waiting until she can afford to go all out. Until then, she enjoyed the opportunity to create a style in the kitchen that was, "a little more personal." She didn't have to worry about what anyone else thought or worry about investment or future house buyers. And, obviously, she had to do something truly cost-effective.

Jenn told me that she loved that someone in the comments said that it was "great Canadian design" — because that's so it: She was going for a rustic, vintage and relaxed aesthetic.

Jenn can be found online at her just-about-to-be-launched business, Russet and Empire Interiors and at her personal blog, The Interiorist. Congratulations, Jenn!
