782What I Love About My Home
My apartment (called an Ohana here in Hawaii) is a converted workshop and boat storage area. I absolutely love the soaring 10 foot tall ceilings that really open up to make the small space seem very spacious. The great room opens up to a small outdoor area that I made into my little Zen garden. I usually have the back door open so I can look through my screen door from the moment I enter the house and look down my hallway and mentally escape into my garden.
Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home
My biggest challenge was the very odd floorplan and having a very small bedroom that also has a shower inside the room. The bedroom was way too small to fit my king size bed so I chose to turn the great room into my "everything" room and put my bedroom in a corner of this room. I was hesitant to have my sleeping area next to my living area but found that I really like this arrangement.

Love the zen garden! Also I'm totally in love with the art of the tree and birds in your living area..could you tell me where you got it or who the artist is?
And I'm just curious why you didn't put your bed in the den area...too small?
Would love to have seen pictures of your kitchen and den.
Love all the colors!

Lovely Audrey! Its nice to see another Maui girl & space on here. The turquoise/lime combination is bright and happy. Your garden is beautiful, I'd leave the door open too.
I'm not the tropical zen type normally but love what you've done. I have an 800 sq ft space in Maui Meadows attached to my family's home. We just finished construction so unfortunately I'm going to miss entering this year's cool contest (my art & mirrors are still sadly stacked on the floor waiting to be hung in their new home).

Now this is what I consider small - cool. It's tiny (about the same size as my studio) and totally cool - I love that garden! Nice work!

Love the colors. Was there no way to reconfigure the bathroom-den-closet space. It looks like a missed opportunity.

I really love how you arranged this open space to fit so many functions and almost seem like rooms-within-a-room without adding anything to divide the space. So gorgeous!!!

Your beautiful little space really captures the spirit of 'aloha'!

Tomahto, on Maui, a secondary dwelling, a cottage/apartment/addition/suite separate from the main house is referred to as an "ohana" It is called an ohana because it is often used to house extended family as many of us have multi generations living on the same property . Very similar to a mother-in-law apartment or accessory dwelling on the mainland.
So, Audrey has not used the term incorrectly.

geez that garden is to die for.

@mauishopgirl weird, never heard that term in all the years I lived there. ::shrug:: learn something new every day!

I grew up on Maui and don't remember it at that time but just returned home and its tossed around a lot.
They don't use the term on the other islands (I was living in Honolulu before I moved back), just Maui.

Actually, I live in Honolulu and ohana unit is used all the time for the house behind the main house. Just check Craigslist.
Beautiful place. I love Makawao. This place fits right in there.

I love your use of color and pattern. I really wish you had shown a picture of your den. The shower situation is so odd, it's hard to wrap my head around.

I'm one of the few people who have seen Audrey transform this ohana from an industrial garage to a truly inviting home.
She has created a unique, multi-faceted yet function and relaxing space. It is so much better in person than pictures could ever convey. She continues to update and improve, which keeps it fresh and inviting. I thought it was perfect when I last saw it a few months ago (before I moved off island), but the changes I spotted in the photos takes it to yet another level.
It is a place that reflects her amazing personality: beautiful and serene.

I love how you've combined an electic yet tropical zen feeling with all of your lighting, furniture, colors, and artwork. I adore that painting of the birds and the tree - cool artist!
I hope you win - you could be the next design star!
