720What I Love About My Home
I love everything about my house - especially the original character and history of the house. It's a Sears Kit home. In terms of my decor, I love the built in bookshelves in the office and the artwork.
Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home
The biggest challenge was having the patience to wait and find the right furniture. Scale was always a factor - there's nothing worse than giant furniture in a tiny space. *photos 3,4 & 5 by Bethany Nauert.

Thanks for all the love!
@ Mandarin614, the color in the living room was already there when I bought the house. Sorry! It's a really basic off white.

This house would be perfect if I lived on my own. The hexy tiles are lovely and that bookshelf is fantastic.

Your washroom is to die for! Crystal knobs, penny tile floor (!!!), and a claw foot tub = love. I'm super jealous. ;)

That is the exact couch I am looking for, where did you get it?

Oh my dear. I've hallucinated about your cute little house ever since the house call. Gorgeous!
view Cactina's profile
Wow, that tiling in the bathroom is amazing!
view Lyric&RadioWalk's profile
Hi einsd - the couch is from Crate & Barrel:
http://www.crateandbarrel.com/furniture/sofas/hennessy-sofa/s448527
And glitchgirl, my walls are textured and the matte paint looks great so I say give it a go! You can always just get a sample size of the paint and see how it looks.
view chaight's profile
I am really intrigued by your brown bedroom. It seems so calming! I'd love to try something like that in my bedroom, but the walls are so horribly pocked and uneven...matte paint just would not work. :(
view glitchgirl's profile
Lovely home. And thanks for including the floorplan. I love to see a floorplan - it helps with perspective.

I love the turquoise and red in the kitchen! We're going to do those colors in our living room :)

I must ask where you purchased the shelving for your office? You did an incredible job! So organized!
view missmae11411's profile
@missmae11411 - the shelves are custom built-ins that I had built and installed.

I love your home. It is modern, but homey and
best of all it's not contrived!

I agree about scale! I really like the thinner frame of the coffee table. Where did you find it? thanks
view Shediri's profile
Love this home ,the kitchen is fabulous .
view kimscollectables's profile
@Shediri, the coffee table is from a 2nd hand furniture store.
view chaight's profile
So jealous of the office - oh, to be surround by bookshelves. I also adore the retro kitchen.
view ccahillmn's profile
Cate- What a great find! I will continue my search...
view Shediri's profile
That bedroom paint is heavenly. Brown is a color I would never think to use, but after checking out these house tours I am very close to using it in my living room. Love how the delicate patterns on the curtains and quilt balance the dark brown.
view VeraJ's profile
GREAT TASTE Cate! Colors, furniture, and look at that quilt! You must come from a very artistic and cultured family to have such a beautiful place! ;) (wink wink). XOXO Sarah

I think this one is my favorite. I'm not familiar with the Sears Kit Home. Does this mean the original builders bought a kit & built it themselves? I'd love to see what the outside looks like.
view GothamTomato's profile
...And by the way, I love, love, LOVE that built in bookcase. Did you build that yourself?
view GothamTomato's profile
Hey GothamTomato - kit homes were sometimes purchased and built by the owners of a home, but in the case of my house I think it was a contractor who built it and then sold it. There are about 6 of them right in a row on my block, all the same model. Here's more info about them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sears_Catalog_Home
And I didn't build the shelves myself - if only I was that handy! A contractor/carpenter did them for me.
view chaight's profile
I'm loving the stencil above the bed. A beautiful, safe option for earthquake territory. Is it purchased or made? Thanks.
view Roozter's profile
Hi Roozter - it's a decal that I bought on Etsy. I can't find the exact one any more but if you search for 'bird decal' on Etsy you'll find loads of others like it.
view chaight's profile
I love the kitchen. Aqua and hot red are the best.
view lauraprescott's profile
Your home is lovely. Could you please tell me where the red bird print in the living room is from? Thanks.
view ali07's profile
Hi ali07,
The red birds print is by Wayne Pate, although it looks like he's not selling it anymore:

Thanks for all the nice comments everyone. And for the not so nice comments (all posted by people who created new accounts today) lets play nice people. We long term Apt Therapy peeps try to be supportive and constructive. And what's wrong with a bit of friendly competition?
view chaight's profile
My account is pretty new too :( But I try to be constructive! I agree about the brown walls: It's a revelation. It makes the space warmer, but also calmer. Maybe a little bit too dark, but it's ok for the room in which you are anyway only going to sleep.

720 sq ft? I dont think so. Your house, is much larger considering you have a full size basement, and a large front and back yard. What happened to SMALL cool? AT hsould have never let you enter this competition. "Your tainting it for the rest of us." LOL But hey if you wanna compete against our apt you best be ready for the heavy competition. But please dont be sour. Just because we are first and kicking butt!! good luck, your gonna need it!!
FYI, no "pink refrigerator and turquoise Formica countertops" we have better taste then you

view Ginger LaLuxe's profile
It's charming, well-maintained, and lovely, but I didn't vote for it as one of my favorites in the category because it's not. I am not her. And I didn't vote for her.
view Ginger LaLuxe's profile
Thanks for the support everyone. I'd like very much for the tone to be supportive and friendly in this competition. After all, it is only about home design; we're not saving the world here.
Just to set the record straight:
My square footage according to the city's records is 624, and the unpermitted back room brings it up to 720. As for outdoor space, that has never counted towards the square footage of any house ever. And I doubt I'm the only one in this contest with a yard.
Also, I haven't created any fake e-mail addresses. A friend posted on her blog for me, thus the votes I'm getting today.
Thanks again.
