What I Love About My Home

I love my small cool home because it is my retreat. My home is filled with treasures from travels and thrift store expeditions. My retreat is elegant yet, budget friendly. I am really proud that 95% of my home is comprised of hidden gems I find second hand. These finds are brought into my home and are proudly displayed for all my friends and family to see. I even blog about them at www.rashoncarraway.com. I want people to know I have taken much pride in anticipating their arrival, while at the same time making a cozy space for me and my 2 and a half year old Silky Yorkshire Terrier.

Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home

The biggest challenge was symmetry. Windows in this apartment seem to be off balanced. There are a number of weird openings an nooks displaced about the condo. I think if these challenges weren't present, I could do much more. However, a challenge just lends way to being more creative.

I absolutely love the color scheme in the first picture. Aqua and red can either be hideous or gorgeous, but you really nailed it. Always love seeing a fellow thrifter's finds. :)

How much space is on each side of that bed? I have a similarly narrow bedroom and would love to have space on each side, but have been concerned that there wouldn't really be enough space on each side to be practical. Is there a standard amount needed?

Just a few answers.

I open the drapes every morning to let natural light in.

Everything is off-centered, but everything is disguised by extending the window treatment so no one really knows anything is off.

I hope this helps.

@Chiyo

The clearance on each side of the bed is 22 inches.

My personal thought were as long as I had enough space to get in bed I was ok. Plus I can easily just get on the bed from the front area.

Thanks so much for you questions. I hope I have been able to help.

You got mad thrifting skills, yo! Ok, I am totally jealous -- I don't know what kind of thrift stores they have there in RH, but it puts my locals to shame (unless by "thrifting" you mean 1st Dibs, which, of course, does not count). But please tell me your Greek Key Duvet/Comforter thing-y was not thrifted, b/c I would very much like to know where you got it so I can copy you (the best artist's are thieves). Wonderful entry, thank you!

I'm from Rock Hill too. What a great space. I love the refinished sofa - did you also have the base painted?

The only thing I would change is the scale of the mirror above the fireplace.

Beautifully done. I can't say there is anything I would quibble with. I'm going to steal your "I'd rather be thrifting" theme! A refreshing change from the tired Eames era rehash. If I see another Noguchi coffee table/Eiffel chair or rocker, I think I'll scream. It's nice to see some 'sparkle' and fabulous style, and thrifting keeps you out of danger of overdosing on the tired favorites from the big boxes. Anyone can go to Ikea/Target/PB/DWR and fill up a cart. Plus, thrifting is SO much fun. For me, it's all about the hunt! FAB-ulous! Game over; I'm not even going to submit now...maybe next year ;)

I don't agree with the Liberace comment. The place is quite good. My changes would be limited to removing the somewhat gaudy stripes from the curtains and changing out the patterned suburban looking fabric on the dining room chairs.

Thanks so much for your warm comments.

I know my style isnt everyone's style.

I do think it mindful to be cautious of how one critiques a space.

There is someone who has spent a lot of time and energy into making their house a home. If you don't like it, express it in a manner that is approachable.

I am not offended, but there are those that sometimes are.

@rjshops I too am excited to return to the Nate Berkus Show for my design and thrifting skills. The next airing will be quite exciting.

This is almost the exact opposite of my taste and yet WOW. How you thrifted your way to Noel Coward's Hollywood Regency pied a tere is masterful. I've always wanted HGTV or TLC to have a show based on decoratiing via thrift and you'd be a perfect host. Lush and swanky with a bit of irony. Faaaaayyyy-vorite!
