What I Love About My Home

Light quality, openness, and multi-purposed spaces are three things that I love about this converted 1924 newspaper warehouse. The large north-facing windows allow for ample amount of diffused light that is highlighted in finishes and forms throughout the space. I like to continually transform the spaces depending on entertaining needs/ seasons so finding furniture that could easily be moved and used for multiple functions was a major deciding factor when picking out pieces for the space.

Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home

Multi-function! It was certainly a challenge finding furniture that could be multitasked and still be a scale that did not overpower the views or the size of the space. Finding an equilibrium between high-end, vintage finds, big box stores, and hand-made objects creates a mix that both serves the needs of this apartment and the possibility of moving to a new place in the future.

A 'small cool' entry with two sitting areas, huh? I suppose that would be great for entertaining/serving as a guest room, but I would take an office over a second sitting area any day.

The overall effect is lovely, though.

The "suspended" shelves... where can I get them? Fantastic pad!

Those suspended shelves are awesome! Very minimalist and they emphasize the height of the ceiling and drew my eyes up to the awesome lights and exposed ducts. Great work.

The ultra-modern feel is not my personal fave, but I MUST admire what's been done with this space. Totally cool while ultimately functional. Plus, uhhhmmm, is that FIRE coming out of the living room table??? How'd you swing that? More details, please!

I am in LOVE with the third picture! So modern yet so cozy. & very clever to include pictures showing what your place looks like at different times of day! Do you use the black cabinets in the first picture as a bench? I love that!

The shelves are actually from IKEA. They are just threaded on a metal rod and hung with a shelving bracket that would normally be reserved for the underside supports of a shelf.

Reeses902,

The table with fire is a homemade concaution. The legs are undercabinet legs meant for off the stock cabinets. I made MDF boxes and covered them with grout so they looked like concrete...and would withstand the heat. The fireplace itself is a large glass flower vase with a tin container surrounded with river rocks.....just pour ethanol fuel (for indoor/outdoor fireplaces) in the container and light. It is a cheap an easy solution for a cozy atmosphere in a rented apartment.

Adam, that bedroom wall is fantastic. When I saw the smaller pic I thought it was wallpaper, but it seems to be paint, then masking, and a clear coat with a glossier finish (or same color with glossier finish). Always a stunning result, and the pattern you chose is hypnotic! ;^) Everything is fantastic.

Wow! Love this space. But then again, I'm partial to grey, diffused light and modern.

You call 989 Square Feet small? Maybe there was a conversion error with Square Meters… Besides that, it’s pretty cool!

I'm not sure 989 sq ft qualifies as "small" to me (2 sitting areas?), but this space is AMAZING. I love the table with the fireplace, and the wall with the coathooks.

This is lovely. I'm pretty sure the contest is for 1000 square feet and less, and this one just squeezed in at 989.

Here in SD, this would be called a 1 bedroom plus den, and they get snapped up quickly.

Like it... but (some nitpicking):
-the nude painting is hung too high
-the TV is mounted too high
-the ceiling lamps are too matchy-matchy

Agreed, but the TV is hung in it's location so it can be seen throughout the apartment. If it were any lower, it could not be seen from the bedroom/sitting area/ kitchen/ dining. ...the nude drawing is in it's location because there was a larger piece of less-functional furniture there. I still think it works because it is at a point where it just misses the back of peoples' heads when they sit there...as for the lamps, well, they are pretty matchy matchy, but they are perfect for unifying the space when there are large gatherings....almost like a minaturized ballroom.

Gorgeous, just gorgeous. I love the fireplace, the two sitting areas (although I'd need an office or I'd leave a paper trail everywhere). I like the repetition of the lights--lovely, soothing, unifying. I don't even like these colors but you may be converting me, a little. I love your place!

Really nicely set up...not cluttered, but functional and very relaxing! To come home after work into this setting and be able to flop down anywhere....and feel calm...love your place!

miesian,

Thanks! Wow! Now that you've actually explained the details of that to me, I respect it even more.

Freaking awesome.

Maybe I'm too paranoid, but I'd be a little too scared to light ethanol fuel in the middle of my 425 sq ft studio. Nonetheless, I will fantasize about the idea while I'm in the "envisioning" stage of my new place. :-D

There are so many cool elements in this place. I especially love the texture of the bedroom wall. However, I don't get the art on the floor trend that so many are doing - seems unfinished and odd to have to squat down to see artwork.

Very slick and stylish, it looks like you have put a lot of effort in.

Maybe too much however? It was like I was looking for a small flaw to humanise it a bit?

It is showroom perfect, but I didn't get a sense of who you are? Or maybe you are slick and stylish yourself and actually this home IS a good reflection of your personality.

Only thing I didn't like at all was the couch. Is that comfy to lean back on?? I think if you have a lifestyle of lots of nights out and hardly at home, or do lots of formal entertaining it would be fine, but if you are a lying on the couch watching movies and bad TV sort of person it certainly doesn't look inviting or cosy.

I feel this place IS a reflection of myself and my personality. There may be a few "personal" touches missing here or there, but that is because I am not someone that will purchase things on a whim. I am fresh out of college and moved into this place a little over a year ago. My previous place was a quarter this size....I have, to this point, tried to focus on buying "investment" pieces of furniture that can move with me in the future and will only add character with time and age. There are few belongings in this place because I try to live a very clean and minimal life....and nothing I have searched for I have absolutely loved. I am sure at some point this place will be furnished with more personal belongings, but for now I am happy with the spaces being clean and minimal.....the couch is actually more comfortable than it looks. At, first it was a little stiff, buy after some wear it is breaking in very nicely....I feel it only adds to the clean tailored lifestyle I lead.

Ok, I'll start by saying that I haven't consumed any type of drug and I've only had ONE glass of wine. Now, with that said, doesn't it look like one art piece is "speaking" to the other?? The one guy is peeking out from behind the sofa, and the other is hiding his face as if to say, "Stop looking at me like that". LOL (I can be special sometimes). Anyhoo, this is a great looking place. I favorite'd.

I have the same Banana Rep Bag!!!! LOL in white too!

I love your space and I love matchy matchy with splashes of color in other rooms that tie in everything. I totally understand buying investment pieces and have purchased many pieces that some people can't believe I snatched at amazing prices. It's personal taste people!

I also appreciate how you have catered this to your style and made sure that when you have your OWN place you would do it right. I know I did and I made sure it looked all polished and grown up..even on a budget!

Just because it did not come from craigslist, a college dorm room, granny's house or on a curbside doesn't mean it doesn't have character!

Now I've never been to Oklahoma, but if this is the style that exists there then I must visit Tulsa sometime! Lots of cool touches, with a good balance of hi-end mid-century furnishings and smart selections from places like Ikea (one of my favorite shopping passtimes!) This place is cool enough for any city.
