750What I Love About My Home
Three months ago we moved to South Williamsburg into the apartment of our dreams. The building is about a hundred years old and has been impeccably preserved. All our windows still have the beautifully detailed original molding. The coolest thing is that they have been painted over a million times, an affect only reached by age. We decided to go with a museum feel design to compliment the space. Hope you enjoy our home!
Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home
Getting the furniture into the apartment! We have a three floor walk up to our apartment and a tiny entrance door. Our best find was the sexy blue chesterfield sofa in our living room. It took Alex and his friend Ben one hour to get the couch up and then a genius strategy to get it actually in through the door. Thank god no one was coming up or down the stairs!

This is my favorite. Warm but not overdone-- you knew just when to stop. Your friends must love coming over for coffee.
And, once again, that damned tulip table taunts me with how perfect it looks in every room, in every aesthetic.

This is so beautiful and the only weak spot is the skimpy little palm tree. If I were a stylist or editor or something like that I'd say take it out.
But it is your home and I do not believe that homes should be perfect. There is a kind of
Charlie Brown's Christmas tree appeal to it.

I'm jealous of the palm. :/
This is an example of a home that is almost the exact opposite of my personal decor style and yet I find it incredibly beautiful and inspiring. It feels rich and elegant and like it has a story to tell.
And one day, when I grow up, I too will have a Chesterfield sofa. yes, perhaps an indigo leather one. Sigh.
P.S. Re: the wheel wagon coffee table? Make sure it isn't taken away by "The Law Firm of This is Mine, This is Yours."

And I love your Paris (Florence?) picture in the 4th picture. (Please don't tell me it's just a cutting board or something and make me feel all embarrassed!)

Is it cause I'm a guy that I don't get all the love for this place? It looks very haphazard to me, the furniture arrangement doesn't seem right, and all you see of the kitchen is just a couple of wood shelves.

Stunning! Where in S. Williamsburg is this place? Could I have your landlord's number? ;)
view Helvetiver's profile
rebuttal - We just moved in a few months ago, so things are still being figured out. The living room is the only room that is even close to finished. The bathroom has nothing to show off, yet. And as for the rest, slowly but surely, it's a work in progress. And I dont think it has anything to do with you being a guy, in my opinion it has a more masculine than feminine style.
view Mr. K's profile
It's beautiful! very good Job on furnishing this small apartment, I love it!

Hm well I don't really get how it's masculine. I thought the style was supposed to be kind of romantic and old-fashioned? I can't say I know any guys who have done their place in this style.

Before moving to NY, I lived in a small VA town where almost every house was 100 years old and the poor insulation just made everyone depressed in the winter -not to mention the utilities were way too high. I agree that the placement can use some work. But in time i'm sure nicole will figure it out. I think the wrought iron bed is refreshing after seeing hundreds of solid headboards everywhere! It let's the light from the windows shine through the bed. I cant wait to see more pictures of the finished product! Great Job Nicole!

I think the reason so many people are responding to this is because it is one of the very few traditional designs seen on this site. Traditional, yet young, modern, fresh, and updated. You chose not to go with the expected granite/stainless/simple lined furniture/modern geometric fabric patterns/cold colors/retro design/modern design/etc., etc., that is seen everywhere. You also didn't go with the expected furniture/design that matches the exact period in which your apartment was built (also very expected). Instead your design compliments that period beautifully without being a slave to the time period the place when the place was built...or trying too hard to do whatever is current and "now". Very, very good job.

It's absolutely gorgeous, but I have to challenge its place at the top - it only shows the living room and bedroom. There is still about 400 sq ft that isn't being shown.
And...I am sure that most participants are activating various friends and family networks to get votes, but when results spike and catapult like this one has, it taints the competition for the whole group.
There is no doubt that this apartment, completed (fully represented), would be one of the top contenders in its own right. Unfortunately, it's not complete and probably shouldn't have been approved by Apartment Therapy this go-around. There could be a pink refrigerator and turquoise Formica countertops that they're dealing with (we've been there). We don't know. But that would make it a decidedly "Not-Just-Yet Small/Cool" apartment.
Again, it's gorgeous. That Chesterfield is rockin' it. But hundreds of votes in an hour? Hmmmm...

Look at the number of votes your getting! I know, I know, it's your mom again. It's funny, though, you accuse other people of cheating if they get anywhere near you in number of votes. You think you're the only one with a mom?
view dnoenso00's profile
You've gotten 30 votes this morning -- you're at 880 now, let's see how many more times you vote for yourself. You've been cheating since you first entered this competition, plus leaving a ton of glowing comments for yourself and nasty comments for your competition. Enjoy your Ipad, you really deserve it.
view dnesona00's profile
For the record: I am not Cate. I have no stake in this competition. I am neither friend, nor family, to any of the candidates listed in any of the categories. I'm just an AT reader who noticed this submission when it was newly listed and thought, "Wow, nice. Incomplete, but nice."
Watching it catapult past the other candidates was hard to miss. It's too bad. It makes you step back and consider - perhaps reassess - the value and esteem the title holds. That's a problem of legitimacy for both the community and the sponsors of the contest. Ultimately, does the "Small/Cool Apartment" finalist really have the best in class or show as determined by a like-minded community of design/aesthetic-oriented folks or do they just have an extraordinary large and loving family who rallied in support, but neglected to consider the cultural aesthetics, philosophies, and framework of the community and the spirit of the competition?
It's a dilemma.
view Ginger LaLuxe's profile
AT is a huge community folks, as we know. as a fellow competitor that was SHOCKED by the HUNDREDS of votes i got within 24 hours of entering, the reality is numbers can jump completely legitimately. it's actually what keeps this one so interesting is the numbers do move! i submitted my apt to contest last fall and because they didn't have the fan base of AT, it was slow going....and we really had to get out on social networking sites to help generate votes. this contest isn't like that at all!! i guarantee i don't know 99% of the people that have voted for me.
i've sensed the sarcastic accusation on my post (ginger laluxe :: you happen to have another sign-in by gingerz?) but come on folks...this is the reality of a large AT online community, social networking tools, and lovely spaces.
everyone who has submitted their space gets my thumbs up just because believe it or not, even though it's for a prize, it feels a bit vulnerable putting your home out there for everyone to see.
how about calling out the strengths when you love something and just not voting when you don't? is that too idealistic?
lets ease up on these two. they seem to be getting the brunt of it...and i ask you not to turn in onto me. :)
to alex, nicole, + cate....best of luck.

3floorsup: There is nothing legitimate about the way this apartment got into first place. I watched in amazement at one point as this entry got one vote per minute, like clockwork, for a couple of hours straight. It was at night, when nobody else was getting any votes, and this entry had already been up on the site for days. It was obvious cheating, and I've watched as the same thing has happened a number of times since then with this entry. The fact that you're defending them makes me wonder about your entry, too. All I can say is if winning this contest is so important to you, that you are willing to cheat and to slander your competitors, then you must be miserable people. Enjoy your Ipads.
view dnesona00's profile
Looks like having a large social network (and being able to tap into Mom's address book) is more important to winning than having a finished, completed space. This space is nice enough but very incomplete. There are several contestants currently below this one that are far more finished, far better designed.
This contest has turned into a bit of a joke. There really needs to be a change to the judging system to allow for a blend between a popular vote count and like a judging panel of professional designers. And I agree, leaving nasty comments on other contestants pages is just totally crass.

Folks - they use one of the multiple services (like mailinator.com) which creates instant email accounts. No registration, just go to the website and like magic there is your email address waiting for you. You just refresh the page and get a brand new one. So with instant email accounts, it becomes very easy to register over and over again on AT, and vote repeatedly for yourself. I'm pretty sure that's how they do it.

I'd make one big change. With so little furniture in the bedroom, you could easily turn the bed so that the head faces the window. In addition to nighttime stargazing, you'd have better access to your wonderful bay window. You could then put the lamps on a wider, taller dresser behind the headboard... giving you additional storage space and reading light while eliminating floor clutter.

Why does every entry from Brooklyn / New York look like they live in a flea market?
Apartment Therapy readers are such suckers for chipped paint and antlers.

I think my favorite feature here might be the "When Harry Met Sally" wagon wheel coffee table. LOL :)
