What I Love About My Home

With high ceilings, two full walls of windows, exposed brick and wood beams original to the building, my apartment has character and style even before adding my furniture and artwork.

Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home

Resources for cool interesting pieces at my budget are hard to come by in a smaller city, so finding pieces of furniture that I liked, that were in my budget, and fit my space without being dwarfed by the tall ceilings was a definite challenge.

I've been to Grand Rapids a lot, and I never knew it had such STYLE! Congrats!

I just wonder why you're not in the top ten. this is my dream apartment. I wish there were more of such brick-wall large windows flats in Milan!

I love the eyes above the bed.
The place is so gorgeous that even if you didn't have a stick of furniture in it it would look good so for that reason I don't think you should win. it was just too easy to work with a place that gorgeous.

Appreciate all the comments so far! The eyes and the three canvas paintings above the kitchen table are pieces I've painted. Thanks for the likes and dislikes on my art as it helps me with considering different perspectives for future pieces. Keep 'em coming.

I love how you have the orange/rust colored cushions on the couch and your pillow colors. They just pop out of the brickwork!

Is your bed a Murphy bed?
Love everything!

why did you leave the bed out in the open? seems to be a large enougha space to tuck it away.

Yes, the bed is a murphy bed and I don't think I have put it up once since I've lived here. Its just second nature to have it down plus I use the underneath for added storage.

mattNmags: my place is basically a big open square with the bathroom and closets in the center.

I should have put where the doors are in my layout, but the entry opens into the kitchen opposite of where the washer and dryer is.

I can't remember where the rug is from -sorry.

That is such an awesome floorplan!

Where's the refrigerator? To the right of the stove?

What's the solid white square in the bathroom? (Middle, right... behind what I assume is the TV.)

Beautiful home. It's exciting to see someone from Grand Rapids post, especially when that someone is your neighbor. :) Hello from the Metropolitan (that's my window)!

-Non-creepy neighbor that also loves AT!

I really like the brick, the wood beams, and the olive color on the wall behind the bed.

A very sexy space. I like the wall color, exposed bricks and overall atmosphere, though I would have changed all the blind shades to curtains like the ones near the bed, it looks better.

You went to Ikea... and bought sticks. nice.

Seriously, the space is awesome, but would have liked to see more personality than just home designer inspired/created art on your walls.

Furniture and place is great, but you should soften up the vibe with bright window treatment. Those black blinds make you place too heavy... My vote.

TheoJ: Wish I had more money for furniture but did the best with my limited funds, same thing with the art. The art is either stuff I have done myself (the eyes and painting above dinner table) or pieces I have paid only 20 or less bucks on or have been given. Still love everything I have though. Wish the pics were with the blinds up too but I kept getting a bright flash in the pics and the pics were bad without the flash. Needless to say I'm not good with photography.

Sam I Am: the fridge is next to the stove and the white space I'm guessing is pipes in the walls. There is no usable space there unfortunately.

Holding it down for Grand Rapids! I was looking out your window in the fifth picture to try to see which apt. complex this is. We (my fiance) and I are looking into the metropolitan this summer. Great place :)

Like a lot of people have commented, it is nice to see a Grand Rapids (and not NY entry) for a change! Nice to know you dont have to be in Manhattan to have a place with a bit of an edge.

Having said that, can't say I am a fan of the eye painting. It is just too creepy for me and coming home to scary eyes just doesn't say welcome home to me!!

Well done though

The eyes remind me of a Prince video or some other 80s retro loft touch. Which, to me, is edgy and cool. It adds some dramatic punch to the room, and it's framed perfectly by the bed.

They eyes painting has another painting that completes the piece. I included a link to what the full painting is. Couldn't fit the lips above my bed. Glad my art is generating some discussion. That's what art is all about!
