What I Love About My Home

Our loft is in of a renovated factory in South Boston, and we love the exposed brick, huge windows, industrial feel and open design. The best part that whoever designed this building recognized the limited space and "built up," using ceiling track, pendant and sconce lighting (eliminating the need for floor and table lamps) and creating a ton of vertical storage. The large closets and above-closet storage help us stay organized and keep our space open for friends and guests (and allowing us a fun, ladder-accessable pillow fort!) Organization is crucial since our loft doubles as my home art studio and office.

Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home

Mike and I recently graduated college and this is the first "real" apartment for both of us, so the biggest challenge was figuring out how to use the furniture we had and a very low budget to create a home we enjoyed being in. We did this by using entirely second-hand furniture and some DIY elements, such as the coffee table, which we made using Mike's college coffee table and a vintage barn door I found and refinished. We both have a similar idea of our perfect space (a funky, laid back, jungly hangout) so we committed to only bringing in color and decor which fit that vision.

What a beautiful apartment. I love all the plants!

Nice apartment. The couches are killing it for me - I feel like just switching to some cooler couches in any style that you like - vintage, antique, industrial, modern - would make the place much much nicer.

Nice! I love all the plants. I actually like the couches - they look way comfy - but some pillows would pull them into the room better. Maybe burlap or grainsack? I'd even do funky rectangular ones instead of square. Just my thoughts.

How do you deal with all the ghosts up in that tree fort? :)

I'm not usually one to make negative comments here, but the living room just looks straight of out a college rental...

I don't like the decor (other than the plants! Love those!) but the space itself is amazing. Presumably the rest of it will sort itself out over time as some of the furniture is upgraded. I do like the coffee table and how it contrasts with the brick and all the plants. I don't mind the black couches, although I agree that some pillows would really help pull things together.

I love this! I've been so drawn to exposed brick recently, and their apartment is lovely!

I want your studio! What wonderful natural light. And the barn door DIY coffee table is such a smart way to reuse the older table you don't want on display. I'm impressed by your budget savvy.

Not my style, but I like the way it all fits together; rather than "zones" you've got a single style that goes through the entire house. Kudos!

Thanks for the sweet comments everyone! I really appreciate the constructive criticism, too... we've only lived here for a month, so there are definitely some decor and design aspects that will sort themselves out in time. As for the couches, they were a very welcome gift and fit so many people so comfortably that we're happy to look past the fact that they don't completely match our decor.

JahRose - I love the grainsack pillow idea, thanks!
Bizzle- the tree fort ghosts are welcome, as long as they BYOB :)

TREE FORT?!?! You have a TREE FORT?! We need pictures of that. I think you managed to rock some relatively unattractive couches into your space. They work, but I agree with the colleg-y decor statement. Do the couches OR the papasan and it'll really tighten up your design.

I love the brick archway! So unique and unusual to have that in a home. I think you've done a great job pulling together your place in such a short amount of time. I'd love to see some pictures after you've lived there for a while longer and see how the place evolves! Great job. Do you have a site where you sell your art? I'm a designer and I'm always looking for local artist to support. Thank!

The plethora of plants & select use of wood -- these go so well with the brick & warm it up. And they unify things so that the black couches are a non-issue.

Only 1 month? Sheesh. Nicely done.

I got an account simpy to ask where the painting (poster? art work?) that says "live travel adventure" came from? Love it.

Christina Marie - Thanks! I sell my artwork locally and on Etsy. The link is in my profile if you'd like to see more.
MsPface - If only we were allowed more than 5 photos! As for the papasan chair, I know they are the ultimate decor faux pas, but I've always had a soft spot for them and love the cozy vibe this one has... its like the comfy ugly sweater I can't bear to throw out :)
Restlessness - Thank you! "Live, Travel, Adventure, Bless" is a painting I finished recently and hadn't put away yet... you can see it in more detail here if you like: http://www.flickr.com/photos/maechevrette/5436885991

This is a fantastic space and I love LOVE your kitchen! But yeah, those couches are killing me. They do look comfy though...maybe the same style in a different leather colour??
