408What I Love About My Home
- The fact that most furniture and decoration has been found either in the trash (all of the chairs, for example), in thrift stores or are family items. - Our newly-restored 1950s sheet metal kitchen cabinets. (We removed the gloppy white paint and restored the original yellow and chrome finishes) - A sunny, quiet space in a busy neighborhood - Great Homasote wall to display working prints - High ceilings accommodate salon-style picture hanging
Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home
Always being on the look out on the sidewalk or thrift stores for furniture and other items, then having to lug them back on the train and rearrange everything to accommodate it. We let the whims of the sidewalk dictate our decor.

Very nice. I like the sitting area.

What an interesting layout. I bet you could do some fun things with that long hall. Your little reading nook looks so cozy.

I like your place, but feels a little crowded to me...sorry

The kitchen cabinets look great! Gives me hope for my own kitchen.

Love: the reading nook, and the postcard wall, and the thrift-funk aesthetic. It does get a little "imported wholesale from an antique/junk store" in places (the first bedroom shot, which seems a bit busy) but overall I much prefer this than another generic looking minimal box of an apartment. You have my vote.

Thanks! @MsPface & @Juiet: The hallway is actually being used as a place to display my work prints for my fine-art photography. It's great because every few weeks old work gets taken down and new work goes up. You can see more of my work at www.seanlitchfield.com

OMG! It's not another sterile MCM (no one lives here) apt. It's a house that looks lived in! I LOVE it.

love the lived in look of your apartment! Your artwork is great and I love that you rotate it so it never gets boring! It's also very interesting how that hallways is laid out. It appears like a huge waste of space (the kitchen could be so much larger if that wall wasn't right in the middle) but since you use it to display art it seems to serve your purpose well. I'll be sure to check out your site!

I had to look up the word Homasote - cool!

Love the kitchen cabinets! It feels like a place I'd like to live.

the problem with decorating with trash, is that it looks like you decorated with trash. those chairs look disgusting. Layout looks great so maybe when you get some cash to buy furniture the place will come together.

Sean L, glad to hear you're getting use out of that awkward hallway. It looks like a ton of wasted space, otherwise, especially for such a spall space.

Love the whole place, but especially the kitchen, with the yellow cabinets and the two kitties.

Love it! When I lived in Boston all my favorite pieces of furniture were sidewalk finds, too. Not so here in Los Angeles. Good luck!

big heart-on for the yellow chrome cabinets. i also love those skinny little side tables inthe first picture- i'm forever seeking skinny skinny tables to eat up the wasted corners of my pint-sized flat.
however, my concern for you is that "letting the sidewalk dictate your decor" might one day bring home some unwanted guests (and by guests i mean bedbugs). be cautious, especially with anything upholstered.
otherwise, what a very charming and unusual little place! :)

Great balance of cozy and bohemian-sophisticated - I could move right in. Wish I could "favorite" this a million times! There's certainly something to be said for a warm, non-sterile home.

..*pensive pause* I have a dislike for angular spaces, packed to the brim. But both words I used ('angular', 'packed') differs in definition, from person to person.. so, therefore, I cannot judge. But..personally.. angular and packed places scares me, BIG TIME. it reminds me of a jailcell. (but perhaps to do with my 'background' too... 99% of housing here in my country are angular and small [therefore inevitably 'packed to the brim'] Living in 'jails' for too long do make you desire other places y'know *smile* alright...too much about "me" - I apologise. =/)

Love your attitude! And the cats, the cats sold me. Give them a good belly rub for me.
Your place is a charmer, I'd love to live somewhere so funky fresh. Well done!

Original, stylish, full of personality, artistic, vintage+modern balance just right, and cats. What's not to love?! A perfect home, bravo.

"the problem with decorating with trash, is that it looks like you decorated with trash. those chairs look disgusting. Layout looks great so maybe when you get some cash to buy furniture the place will come together." I honestly don't understand people who only come in to comment in order to dump all over somebody's home... if they like the chairs, then what does your opinion matter?

I LOVE the kitchen and I'm jealous of your hallway. That's a lot of blank wall space.
I don't think there is anything wrong with "decorating with trash." I have a lot of treasures that other people considered to be trash.

@whereismurder: Rude. And for no good reason. This apartment certainly doesn't look dirty by ANY means. I applaud anyone who is "green" enough to find value in things that others discard without discretion. And quite frankly, vintage items are quality as compared to the mass produced "trash" you can find brand spankin' new. So let's not be rude, 'mkay?

I just noticed the arched mirror over the dresser in your bedroom. What a fantastic piece - an unusual shape that's just perfect! I also love the colors in your afghan throws.
Ignore the naysayers; there's a reason the saying is "one man's trash is another man's treasure", not "one man's trash should be considered trash by everyone".

love it- sure, it's crowded in some spots but that is how some of us live (more is more - plus two people living in a very small space). I love the little juxtapositions - like what looks like an industrial/art studio stool with the columned side table in the living room pic - plus granny crochet offset by that clean white painted window frame.

I love the sidewalk finds. It's too bad we can't do that in NYC anymore; the bedbug problem makes picking anything up a gamble at best.
