What I Love About My Home

I moved here last month from a very shiny new building with no character. I love my new place. The built-in bookcase and the molding and the general sense of coziness is exactly what I was looking for. My one compromise was not having great light (I look into a courtyard) but since the majority of the time I spend at home is at night I am quite content.

Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home

I originally thought about defining the bedroom space with a long low bookcase, but decided against it. The open flow works much better and after two years of studio living I actually don't mind having the bed front and center. It makes a nice extra place for people to perch when I entertain.

Serene. Also has a mid-century feel (not just the decor but the era itself) like one of the secretaries on MadMen developed a fit of independence and got her own apartment in Manhattan. When you create visual interest like this, the size of the space becomes a secondary issue. Very cool.

I agree. Very MadMen-esque. Lovely.

At first, I didn't think it was one of my favourites...but by the time I got to the last picture it definitely was! I like how each area feels like a distinct space even without walls or separations. The colours are calming and I love all your furniture. Where did you get the picture on the wall in pics 3 & 4? I love it!

It is very interesting how the bedroom/living room is separate- but not. very lovely colors.

You have the Organic Modernism Luna credenza! I've been eyeing that, but lack of consumer reviews on their products keeps scaring me away. How's the quality?

@pheebs79, I'm pretty sure those are both by Wayne Pate. You should be able to buy them on his website.

Did you enter last year's Small Cool? I think I recognize some of your furniture! Not to sound stalkerish or anything, I just remember really loving your entry from before. (Assuming it's the one I'm thinking of.) Anyway, good luck this year!

Thank so much for all of your nice comments. To answer people's questions:

1) The paint color in the entry way is actually the same throughout the apartment it just looks different in the dimmer livingroom lighting. It's Benjamin Moore "Silver Lake".

2) Yes the pictures are Wayne Pate.

3) I love the Luna credenza. It looks great and it's incredibly well made. It actually made me realize how poorly made a lot of my stuff is in comparison. I highly reccomend it.

4) Yep I entered last year with the unfortunate title "Lindsay's Little Box". Decided to take things in a less sleek modern direction this time around.

I agree with aliciafig above. Your decision to go with a column of books either side of the "entrance" to your bedroom instead of the long low bookcase you first considered was a touch of genius / fun. And photo 3 shows a bonus effect - the lamp placed near the books creates a light-and-shade transition at night. Great choice of white furniture etc for that peaceful end of the room, moreover.

Lindsay - Silver Lake by BM has been on my paint shortlist for almost a year, and you just sold me on it completely. Thank you so much for this beautiful example of it in low light. I think I'm ready to paint my own 380 studio now!

..don't know why, yet it reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw's apartmant :), well done :).. I signed in for the contest as well, so take a look at international entries... I had to use the divider, yet I like your bed is open to the rest of the space. your home is lovely.

i think yours may be my actual favourite entry, in that i totally want to live here. it looks much bigger than it, and i love all the seating without the space looking cramped or cluttered. very stylish furniture, and love the sofa especially!

I remember your old entry as well...I was impressed with what you can do with a small space then and now. You have a great sense of style and an obvious talent.

For next year I think you should think of another name that doesn't have compromise in it as I don't see any compromise in this place. Compromise seems to imply you are making up for something lacking and there is nothing lacking in your place.

The sofa is from Room & Board as are the easy chairs and the ottoman. Thanks for all the lovely comments, oh and AT chooses the name not the contestant :)
