What I Love About My Home

I love that everything in my apartment was a DIY project. As a 20-something living in NY, I don't have a huge budget to decorate and furnish my space. I've made my own curtains and pillows, painted the whole space myself, and have even designed and (helped) build my own bookshelf. By decorating slowly, I have been able to collect items that really express who I am and what I love. My apartment may be tiny, but it is 100% me. And, I love every bit of it.

Biggest Challenge in Furnishing My Home

The biggest challenge I have had when furnishing my home is the size. At 244 square feet I had to very creative with my storage and furniture choices. Any possible space I can use for storage, I have to. I store my ironing board behind my curtain, my broom next to my fridge, and I make full use of the risers underneath my bed. I've also collected my furniture slowly so I can get pieces that fit in my small space. My latest addition is my corner bookshelf that I absolutely LOVE. After years of searching for one that fit the 20" space I had I gave up and designed my own. It's a combination of plumbing pipes and reclaimed wood and the open look of it is perfect so it does not overwhelm the space.

Did you also enter the contest last year? The living area looked really familiar. I just can't get over the exposed brick wall. lovely!

It's expected when you live in Manhattan and just starting off. Think great use of space for 244 square feet.

Love the corner bookshelf; would be a perfect solution in my not-yet-ready-to-compete 240 sq ft. Is there a how-to somewhere?

I love that you created your own shelves when you couldn't find what you wanted; I've done that myself. The space is used beautifully.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful comments! Now, a few answers!

My great grandmother made me that quilt and I love how it brightens up the place. I didn't enter the contest last year, but a lot of Brooklyn buildings have the exposed brick so that could be why it looks familiar. I eat at my coffee table. It's not ideal, but it works. I also can't wait to upgrade to a larger place where I have room for a table! The couch is from Crate and Barrel. It's old so I'm not sure what the model is. It looks similar to the Axis or the Troy they currently have available.

Now for the bookshelf. I don't have a DIY to share, but I can tell you how to get your own. It was a collaboration between my boyfriend and I. I designed what I wanted and we built it out. He will be selling it through his company Merrimack & Monitor. If you're interested you can reach him at jason@merrimackandmonitor.com. He makes beautiful tables, shelving, and lighting.
