Julie's "Orange Ya Inspired?" Room

"Orange Ya Inspired?"

Alexandria, Virginia

Colors Used

The "pea soup" green walls came with the house, and we decided to ground the room with various shades of blue and gray. The liberal punches of orange add energy, while the white accents complement the molding and brighten the narrow space.

Color Inspiration

We recently relocated to the Washington, DC area, and the one relic from our former home that we knew we wanted to incorporate was the large scale abstract painting. The painting's balanced explosion of color inspired our scheme and gave us the confidence to step beyond our (boring) color comfort zone (our old home used a lot of warm neutrals).

Color Tips

I am certainly not an expert! The tried and true minimalist in me is a sucker for all-things white, while my budding maximalist side craves saturated contrast... so I suppose I am a bit of a color schizophrenic. My best tip for anybody is to trust your instincts and have fun experimenting with color. And, always consider the lighting and scale of your space.

The large artwork above white table really makes this otherwise quite formal, elegant space come to life.

I LOVE that painting! Who is the artist? I also love the green as a neutral and the pops of color picking up on the painting. Looks great!

thanks for the comments, everybody! i really appreciate it.

the painting is by chuck rolwing, a chicago-based artist. he's pretty brilliant, in my (rather uneducated) opinion. we bought the painting at las manos, a funky little gallery full of personality in chicago's andersonville neighborhood, where we used to live (and miss dearly).

and you are correct, WexelArt, this room makes me very happy! the painting helped to make our new space feel like home... sort of like a (very beautiful and not so cozy) security blanket.

thanks again, everybody.

Nice job Julie! This is a difficult room to decorate because it's a "pass through" room. I like how you arranged the room in order to accomodate for that situation and I liked the scale of the pieces you've choosen. I especially love the painting and the waterfall coffee table.....Good Job!
