Sara's "Smoke, Citron and Cream" Room

Smoke, Citron and Cream

La Porte, Texas

Colors Used

Benjamin Moore HC-166 Kendall Charcoal in semi-gloss on the bookcases floor to ceiling and the trim. Walls and ceiling are HC-166 Kendall Charcoal in flat finish. Citron and taupe for the chair fabric with a milk-white chair finish and a silvered and crema stone topped study table.

Color Inspiration

I wanted a tough neutral that had a lot of depth to give the room a cohesive and strong backdrop for the gray Italian tile and the study table and chairs. Kendall Charcoal is a warm gray that looks great with just about any color. It is magic for setting off the fabric of the chairs and the layering of creams, silvers and golds in the furniture finishes.

Color Tips

The simplest way to create a cohesive color scheme is to use distinct values of colors in a similar range of intensities. This allows you to create depth and harmony even if using several hues because there will be enough separation between each hue to avoid a color clash. The other important factor is color balance. This room shares warm and cool elements and the warm undertone of the charcoal in the paint color creates a cohesive tie to connect the warm and cool parts of the palette.

I'd have to see more of this room. Five shots of one corner? why?

Beautiful blend of old world and modern. Something very Italian-feeling about it. Really love this.

I love everything in this side of the room. The gray is gorgeouas!. The floor to ceiling bookcase with *gasp* books in them, wonderful! The cream furniture is classy yet inviting. Very nice. So... what's up with the other side of the room?

The warm neutral gray fuses with the layering of colors, I think its important in contemporary architecture to find a balance where so much of it goes cold, lacking depth and harmony with the trendy one dimensional palettes.

The warm incandescent light from the chandelier mixing with soft enveloping natural light emanating from the window highlights the blending of chromatic harmony with a wonderful balance within the color values, a perfect cozy corner where one can catch up to a favorite unfinished book and a latte, approachable with a bit of elegance.

I think being a late entry into the competition and having only one picture of the room really thwarted your chances of winning.

I think this room is serene, sophisticated and beautiful. From what I see here you are a very talented interior designer. I would love to see more of your work. Do you have a portfolio?
