The oriental rug I have belonged to my grandparents. I loved the colors, but wanted to make a more modern room around it. I pulled the navy out for the walls and contrasted it with black, which I think is very current. I love how the blacks reflect the blue---to where you almost can't tell the difference. I wanted a bit of red to pop. And lots of white to keep things light. Brass and gold accents go a bit over the top, completely on purpose. The art is vibrant and fun to keep it from being too formal.

Color Tips


Pick a palette and stick with it. Repeat colors often enough so they look intentional. Make neutrals work hard to ground the space, and let the colors be the personality.
