Evita's "Vintage Panama" Room

Vintage Panama

Name:

Evita

Location:

Charleston, South Carolina

Division:

South

Colors Used

The walls are painted in Wasabi by Valspar and the room is accented with rich tobacco brown and red, with pops of gold, orange and white.

Color Inspiration

We were inspired by the curtain panels and bowls, as well as our love for green. The accent colors literally fell into place as treasured family pieces and memories from the past found their way into the room.

Color Tips

If you have a color urge, indulge it! Paint is the easiest way to make a dramatic change in a room and the easiest to change if you don't like the results. Ultimately it needs to make you happy.

Hi there :) I love this especially because it's such a small area but it's got so many complexities without being overwhelming.

Wonderful color combinations and layout of shelves, objects, etc. Love the light fixture over the table, too! Terrific space!

Thank you for the wonderful comments everyone! @MelissaM - the light is a swag light won on eBay and rewired by my husband. It's one of my favorite light fixtures in our house.

Love it! Greedily looking for elements I can adopt as my own.

Well done.

@vintage birthday - perhaps one day down the road! You're more than welcome to visit my blog to see how we're progressing: http://thehappyheathen.com/

Some additional information about the room…

My parents were married in the spring of 1955. They spent the month of December visiting my grandparents in the Canal Zone. Early that month my grandmother found a magazine from 1913 with the prints of the watercolors while rummaging through an antique store here in Charleston. She had them framed and sent to them as one of their Christmas gifts that year. There were more, but when they tried to reframe them about 20 years ago the pages literally fell apart when the frames were opened.

The two wooden side tables were made by my great uncle in the 40′s, in the Canal Zone. They’re made of Honduran mahogany.

My grandmother was head of admissions at Gorgas Hospital in the Canal Zone while my grandfather was employed by the Canal Zone Company. She became a guardian angel of sorts to many people, among them, many of the sea merchants who passed through the canal. She received some of the old Japanese floats from one of the captains who pulled them from the sea. She eventually passed them on to my father and his siblings. Sadly, ours fell from one of the trees several years ago and broke. We found these at a local antique mall last spring and got them for my mother.

Thanks again for the lovely comments everyone!

I love your style. You've used light and airy colours and still manage to create boldness and contrast with them.

love love love love love! Great color choices. Everything seems to fit well together without feeling too "themey." If this was my room, I'd probably swap out the liquor cart for something else. It seems to stick out as a bit misplaced. Something heavier? wider? I don't know.

Thank you for the feedback, rmurray07! The bar cart will be moving soon to make room for several of our potted plants to live during their winter storage, so whatever we keep there needs to be easy to move. The cart will also be less cumbersome in it's winter home, which may not work the same with something larger. ;)

Evita, WHERE did you get the curtain fabric? I adore it! Thanks.

Hi vic908, we got it at Pottery Barn a couple years ago. It was the last panel but we decided to buy it because we knew we'd have a use for it one day. We knew we didn't want this window to have a full set of curtains so it was the perfect fit! I split it up the middle, finished the edges and re-hemmed it.
