Dan's "Sicilian Umber" Room
Sicilian Umber
Name:
DanLocation:
Chicago, IllinoisDivision:
NorthColors Used
Sicilian umber on the walls, sort of a charteusey color on the two small sofas. The hardwood floors are aniline dyed red (though you can't really see in the picture).
Color Inspiration
Nature - I like browns, greens, golds, reds. Plus, the room is dark anyhow and it's only really used at night so it works.
Color Tips
Don't think about it too much. Choose a color you love, paint a few swatches on your wall : the color and a shade lighter and a shade darker. You'll just see which is right.

Fascinating room!
To add a little more light, though, I'd replace the large empty frame with a large glistening mirror.

I like the first two pictures but 2 to 5 are a little jarring and the space looks cluttered. However, love the use of the bold color on the walls, yes, it's dark but comforting, at least to me. Love the green against the color of the walls.

I second Honore's suggestion to replace the empty frame with a mirror. A round one would be especially cool.

Love the cozy opulence of this room. The night pictures are a little blurry and hard to get a good feel for the colors with, but the daytime shots are great.

This room is delightfully mysterious... As if it's out of a 19th century novel where royal intrigues take place!

I think you should host a murder mystery party here. No really, I love your furniture, it's just my taste. I think your colors aren't coming through as well as they should in the photography, or else you'd have lots more votes, because you clearly have great taste.

I love this room! Gorgeous. The last 3 pics have unfortunate lighting which I think is why peeps here aren't getting it. But the first 2 pics show how beautiful the room is. Dark and mysterious yet comfortable and elegant.

The photos make it kind of hard to tell. But I like the idea of umber walls.

Beautiful, but I was looking for old movie stars
to come in.

This room has a style! It's not my style, but that doesn't matter, it's obvious someone put some thought and love into it. Great job!

I like this, it looks cozy. I think I would like it even more if the floor was hardwood and there was a cool rug instead of wall to wall.

Really really attracted to this room. Elegant, sophisticated, inviting. Colors are exotic and if I place myself there, I feel sexy in this room.

Sophisticated. A nice throwback.

That leopard ottoman takes the whole thing down a notch to me...it goes from being an old fashioned hotel to an old ladies home.

i love it. i can imagine getting dressed up with a group of friends eating caviar and drinking champagne in that room. i imagine that the large empty frame is a play against the large painting on the wall just opposite it that is not framed. But maybe I am just reaching.

Thank you for your kind comments. I know this isn’t the biggest deal in the world, but I wanted to correct one observation. The room doesn’t have wall-to-wall carpet (though I can see how the photos might imply that), but a red aniline-dyed hardwood floor with a natural sisal rug on top. A few feet of the floor around the rug is visible. Sorry for the quality of the photos; I’m not much of a photographer.

I absolutely LOVE the coffee table. The room too dark for me, but there are some great pieces in it. The color scheme would be great if there were more windows/natural light coming in to balance out the darkness.
