Michele's "Happy Daze in Austin" Room

My entire house, with the exception of the bath, is painted with Behr's Patio Gray - a soft, pale greenish-gray. Everyone, but everyone asks me what the wall color is. It's clean and cool, but also cozy and warm at the same time. Because all of the wall color is so cohesive, I can add lots of other colors without them being overwhelming. I have a lot of orange, yellow, red and even lime green paired with it. We're a happy, fun family and the colors really reflect that vibe.
Color Inspiration
The fabulous Evelyn Ackerman tapestries that I inherited from my Dad! (As well as a gorgeous and now defunct Crate and Barrel rug that got trashed in about 13 seconds.) They were the first things I put in this room after the floors were done and the paint was dry. Also, I was determined to use the Patio Gray on all the walls because I love it so. I was afraid that the pale green of the paint was not going to work with the tapestry colors, but they sure pulled together beautifully.
Color Tips
Oh, just what everyone else has said. There are no rules other than to decorate with colors and things YOU love. The most wonderful homes to me are those that are happy, comfortable and reflect the personalities of the dwellers within. Make yourself and your family happy; everything else is just for show.

What a happy space! I love how your children's books and board games are used as pops of color (my daughter just bought 3 Warrior books yesterday)!

Yes! That's a Karlstad. I traded couches with a neighbor. I think it's an old color; isn't it great?

The wall color makes a beautiful cool background for the brilliant colors splashed all around. The over-all effect is more than cheerful--it is "blues defying"!

No cohesion here -just a random set of miss-matched furniture in different colors.
view ebb&flow's profile
This is am amazing space. This place is very well thought out. I've seen people put many different colors in one space and it looks like a garage sale. You my Dear are great at it.

Is that a TV in the picture I see hanging on the wall in the last picture? I would love to see a picture of it head on.
view paul.sikkema's profile
@ paul.sikkema - Paul, that is actually an old Pachinko machine from the 70s. That would be rad TV though, wouldn't it?

THIS is how you do neutral walls and still have a vibrant, colorful space. A ton of the entries this year are way too neutral to warrant being in the contest and should take a cue from this space. It's awesome.

THANK you DipDipDive!

Lovely.
And almost completely off topic, I want to recommend Lucy Maria Boston's Green Knowe books to whoever in your house reads YA fiction. Recent editions have covers done by the same artist who did the Lemony Snicket books. The best part is still what's inside the covers, though.
view kmehl's profile
This, in my opinion, is one of the best interpretations of "vintage meets contemporary" I have seen in years.
view brkpndrgrss's profile
Jackmehoff - Insults are much more effective if you spell them correctly. Definitely.
"Cute" screen name; are you 12?
view MamaHolt's profile
Kmehl - Thank you for the recommendation. We will definitely check them out.
Brkpndrgrss - Thank you very much for the lovely compliment.

You have a Pachinko machine?!?! I am so envious! I wish this was my room;-)

There is something about this space that keeps me coming back to look at it over and over. I can't put my finger on it, but I LOVE this house. House Tour! You should win the whole thing. Lucky kids who get to live here.

Paige.mctyre - That's the Pachinko machine. you can google it to learn more. Crazy cool thing.

Amazingly skillful job of bringing LOTS of colors together! Very happy, artistic yet also somehow understated space. This entry seems much more to be about COLOR than so many others. SO many.
And yes, the toolbox coffee table FTW!

This was the only room, where I felt I could walk in, chuck my stuff down and have a coffee, relax, and not be paranoid if I was making a mark on anything.
It's a "real" home, and the only one that made me smile.
view Serena Sax's profile
Cute stove. I am such a sucker for typical Austin homes. Color color I love color.
view House Voyeur's profile
Okay, so I guess you didn't win the grand prize, but let me just say that the Blue/Gray room has zero personality. I can't tell if anyone even lives there. But your home...yes...I can see that a family lives there and plays games together, and is learing piano and loves to read. Much more inviting and 'real.' ;-)

Congrats for getting into the finals -- very nice room.
view kassgood's profile
I love your place - I agree with a previous poster about your place looking like someone actually lives here! I'm drooling over the tapestry in your dining room too. Can you share where you got the tablecloth?
