Annie's "Maine Shoreline" Room

Maine Shoreline

Name:

Annie

Location:

Brooklyn, New York

Division:

East

Colors Used

red,orange,and dark gray on white

Color Inspiration

the clear blue sky of new england makes red and orange look brilliant in Maine. the dark gray rug grounds the room and this is the only room in the house where hung our art so the walls are white to receive the art.

Color Tips

I don't really have rules I just balance the weight of the colors around the room so it feels comfortable.

Is that a radiator under the framed photos? I'd love some more info on that.

Yes, love that Aran rug, the scale gives the room a dolls-house feel (er, but in a good way).

The split chairs are mad (also in a good way) and I love the two lines of pictures that don't quite meet at the corner.

Oh and I also love the orange :)

What is this type of rug called? Are there any less expensive options?

I've tried search terms chunky, knit and cable to no avail...

Love it all, especially the creative placement of
the art and chairs (which are also art). The mix of humble materials comes off as very elegant and relaxed. Definitely a fave!

Now that I know the rug is 11K, I'm going to learn to knit (or try to talk my mother in law into knitting it for me). That thing is amazing (can you just throw it into the wash?).

I'm in love! The rug and the chairs are definitely my favorite parts, but it really does feel like a Maine beach house in the fall/winter. The rug reminds me of a fisherman's sweater. So cozy and clean!

Good news about the rug--it can be gift wrapped for only $1 more!

It is a fabulous rug and I love the artwork around the room.

Oh my god I love the light fixture, but after hearing the price of the rug, I'm afraid to ask.

Yikes, that rug is too rich for my blood as nice as it is... I do remember coming across a large doily rug off of etsy that might be more affordable for some of you guys who love the rug. It's *only* $900 (http://www.etsy.com/listing/60864322/4ft-handmade-mega-doily-rug)
or ranging from $600-$1200

Oh! and this one which is closer to the original in the post. I knew I'd seen something similar. This one is 48x36 for only $198. I'm sure she could do something large and/or witha pattern.

The picture on that etsy posting (by Stream13) of the woman knitting with giant needles is priceless. I love this room, though more for the ideas about how to hang pictures creatively than for the color.

I absolutely love the duvet cover. Does anyone know where it is from? Although, if the rug was $11k, maybe I shouldn't get my hopes up for the duvet cover.... Beautiful room.

The duvet is Ikea, and was way cheaper than the carpet. It has two sides that are different, other side is larger orange bubbles with more cream as background. It is a couple years old.

I didn't realise the rug was officially called an Aran rug, I just thought it looked like traditional Aran jumpers you get in Ireland. Maybe if you had some extremely large knitting needles you could use an Aran jumper pattern and knit one for yourself

The rug was bartered for, the chairs are the artist's work and the chandelier is a beloved piece that the family has carried from many other houses.

Much talk about the rug! While it is nice, the fact that this is a color contest seems to be overlooked. I think the room is pretty but very drab walls, which don't do justice to the rest of the room.

Perhaps a similar effect could be created if you used a chunky textured jute rug in blue or tan and added cabled pillows and/or throws--lots of texture and deep blue color without the high price tag?

China White-many brands will mix it. Its a beautiful color-has enough warm tones that it offsets the usual cool blues in whites.

I love the color balance (white IS a color) in this room, and the unique placement of the radiator, and the practical and novel shelving surrounding it. The rug is a scene stealer but all the other details deserve attention.

There is a real sense of creativity with this design, love it. For those who love the rug, there is a way to have the rug without spending huge amounts of money, you can knit it yourself. All it takes is large wooden knitting needles and several strands of yarn. The website I found is www.racheljohn.co.uk, it's great fun and has helped me feel hugely creative when designing for my house.
