Color Inspiration
Nature and the contrast of pop art. I found that because of our large windows and skylights, I needed to pick a palette that would compliment each season. When it is summer and spring, the colors compliment the leaves outside and in the winter the cool creams echo the snow all around and the other colors warm up the space so it doesn't feel cold. I change the rug in the livingroom to a cream flokati for warmth and to mimic the snow. I chose a simple back drop of creamy white to let the image outdoors pop and then brought some of those colors found in nature inside. Also the era and architecture of the home gave us a "pop art/psychedelic" theme to play off of.
Color Tips
For me, it was letting the architecture and the view out not compete with the inside. When you have windows like ours they are like live canvases. I chose a dominant color and allowed the rest of them to be playful sidebars.

mk76.. I think those are Flor tiles. I absolutely love your view and those skylights. Can I steal your living room for my house?

Hi there! Thanks everyone. I got the rug from FLOR (tiles). I love my coffee table too! It is vintage off of ebay, and it just fits so perfectly for us there. The Chandelier is not real horns, just a well made repro. :-)

howdy, love the sofa, precisely what I've been looking for. May I ask where you found it?

The sofa was custom made at stendmar.com
It is our second sofa from them, and it is comfy and great quality. I hunted for a while before finding them. They are based out of Cali, so if you are near there the shipping would be even cheaper.

Great job. Very natural. Change the rug to a flokati the color green in your pillows or your cream but that may be too much cream/white to warmth it up - the texture of the flokati may be where the warmth is coming from - picture? The orange helps for warmth. I use barn red, ochre, olive, tan and black for my fall colors. Happy Decorating - you are good and one can tell you enjoy it and nature (me too)! I vote you best living room!!!

Lovely use of pops of colour. I also love the setting and the fact that your house has "good bones". A winner all around. I'd like to see a house tour here someday, too!

Haha, VLS- I have a flokati there now! :-) I change it out for the season. It doesn't work in the warmer months, but it is there now. Here is a photo! I have a few pillow changes too but I haven't gotten quite ready yet! Thanks for the comments. http://urbanjane.blogspot.com/2011/10/changing-of-guards-or-rugs-for-season.html

I like the coffee table and the rug. Although the rug size doesn't seem quite right for where it's situated. Should be bigger, I think.

Would love to see a home tour of your place. Lovely. Also, where is the painting from? Who is the artist?

Yes, home tour, please. Love your place and use of color. From the trees outside of your windows, it looks like your place is peaceful and private. I hear Woodstock is like that. I hope to visit the area someday. I'm from PA, so I know the beauty of the mountains.

Love the windows and natural light. You are so right - nothing should compete with the architecture/outdoors
