Color Inspiration


Our family of five was a little scared of moving from close quarters into a spacious house. Splashing our favorite colors on the walls helped make our new house a home. Knowing we would be inside more often than in our Florida home, we brought in a lot of summery blues and greens. We painted a bright grey-blue on the walls in this family play room and then added leafy blue curtains and the black and white striped rug (yes, *that* rug) from IKEA. A cozy moss green velour couch from a second-hand shop and loads of books on a distressed white bookshelf helped give the space personality. Although this room sat empty the longest, it is now one of our favorites - its whimsical vibe and textured colors attract all of us. Our kids call this room the zebra room!

Color Tips


If you have a favorite color or two, don't be scared to use them. Have fun and play with your colors in all shades. If your kid (or your partner or the voice in the back of your head) suggests a giant black and white striped rug (or some other crazy piece that seems to reflect her or his personality), buy it and see what happens. Once you have the big color (walls, rug, large furniture) in place, take your time with the accessories and don't be afraid to let something sit in the space a while before making a decision about it (keep the receipt)! Making mistakes and switching things up is such fun.

I think this is my fave so far. Love the shade of blue and the bold sofa and black and white rug. I love the bookshelf, I've never seen one like that.

this is definitely my favorite. i always love blue. this room looks clean and simple while still feeling cozy. i love love love the couch.

and then how excited was i when i saw you were from winston-salem?

Thanks for the complements, everyone! The bookshelf is from Bramble & Co. and the couch I found at a great little secondhand shop in Winston called re-Tale. I loved decorating this room!

Have seen this room in person and it is amazing. The writing desk looks way better than it does in the photo and is my favorite piece (although I also am in love with the bookshelf). Keep up the great work Lisa - we love you!
