Jeff's "Modern Primary" Room

Modern Primary

Name:

Jeff

Location:

Crestwood, Missouri

Division:

North

Colors Used

Red, Yellow and Black for paint colors and bold primary colors for art and accessories.

Color Inspiration

Once finding the house, we knew immediately that the room needed to be bold and dramatic, as the floor to ceiling windows in the front of the home showcase the room. Muted colors were never an option.

Color Tips

If you like color, use it! Don't be afraid of painting a ceiling, as it can really highlight a room and can make a special light fixture really stand out. Also, the use of black as a wall color can highlight artwork as well as window moldings, etc. It's truly a myth that dark, bold colors make a room feel smaller, so go for it!

I like it. The room feels warm and lively --- just the way you want your guests to feel when you're entertaining. I really like the way the red accents the accessories. I'd have been afraid to go so bold but as you can see, it complements the art. Most people are afraid of color and most people love it. I'm not sure why this is but thank you for showing not only that it works but it works wonderfully well!

I would think I would hate this, but it works because of the furnishings, the artwork and the accessories! Great color!

Well coordinated to say the leasr. I could not have done better! Dark colors actually recede, so don't be afraid to use. Nicely balanced and tied to together.

Great use of bold colors! Many tend to shy away from the use of strong colors, but this is a great example of the right colors used to compliment one another. Great job!

You get a vote from me because, though I wouldn't like to live in this space, I think you used colours boldly and bravely and it works and isn't tacky!

Thanks everyone for the kind words! We selected this color palette with the advice and assistance of our good friend, who is a professional interior designer. We moved into the house eight years ago, and with the exception of some changes in furniture and accessories, it's been this way since the week we moved in. I'm happy to report that after eight years, it still feels fresh and lively, and we have zero regrets!

I'm with sauceykat, it's not my thing BUT you've done such a great job coordinating your colors. It looks professionally done!

I didn't like this on first sight, but as I gazed, I warmed up to the reds and blacks; I think it was the exquisite furniture and art pieces that bought me to thinking and feeling how it all works together wonderfully well.

I personally lean toward more muted colors, but this is wonderfully done. I like how the red walls are balanced with black and white ones and by the pale floor and ceiling. Each wall really sets off the artwork on that wall. The blond wood and silver-tone metals also work really well with this color scheme. The only thing I would change is the arm chairs--just their color--it seems too earthy for the rest of this palette.

Love it! Was this from the home that was featured in the Post Dispatch? I also live in Crestwood and was so excited to see a feature on a Crestwood home. Very refreshing to see something out of the box in an area with so many homes having very dated interiors (we spent over 2 years looking for houses in the Lindberg dist. so I feel like I have been in almost every house in the area!).

Great furniture, but it is totally over powered by the red!

I'm LOVING the light fixture in the dining room - any idea what it's called or who makes it?

Re: Sputnik light fixture

This was given to us as a Christmas present, and was apparently assembled/made by someone locally who builds light fixtures. I have no idea if it was put together with various parts, or if it was from a kit. Needless to say, this was one Christmas present that was a big surprise, and I don't think that it took longer that an hour or two before we hung it!

Thanks again, everyone, for the kind comments!

I love the Eames storage unit! Also, where did the baby blue lamp come from?

Hi Kimota,

The blue lamp was purchased at Crate & Barrel. Probably 4 or so years ago, so I don't believe that it is still available.

Thanks!
