Jen's "Motley Missoni" Bathroom
Motley Missoni
Name:
JenLocation:
Brooklyn, New YorkDivision:
EastColors Used
The main color is Benjamin Moore's "Passion Plum" #2073-30. The stripes are painted with a variety of custom mixed colors.
Color Inspiration
I knew I wanted to paint or draw a pattern on the largest wall, but I was conflicted over the direction in which to go. I'm usually most attracted to patterns that are very repetitive and geometric, but the lopsided angles of this 110 year old building would have made for a lopsided pattern. Fortunately, I came across an amazing Missoni print, and I decided to use that as my inspiration.
Color Tips
Any color can look sophisticated if you balance it with smart neutrals. Most people respond well to contrasts.

You know, it's not my style or taste at all, and yet I can totally appreciate the technique and creativity. Some of the entries I just plain don't like, not only because I don't like the style but I don't like the execution either. In this case, I think the execution is done very well even though it's not my style, so well done.

Great solution to the problem of an old building. Also I must say you did a great job balancing such different colors in a way that is pleasing to the eye. Accomplishing that is actually not easy at all. I wish there were more colors in the accessories though. It seems like white is an easy way to make sure it goes together... if you had incorporated equally colorful accessories in an equally pleasing way that did not seem crazy then I would have been REALLY impressed.

I am instantly impressed by your nod to Missoni because I love anything Missoni. Your idea to use this design for the reason you did--your irregular wall--is brilliant, as well as your outstanding color selection, without which could not honor Missoni, plus your excellent execution of the painting of it, should put you in the in the finals if not make you a winner. Congratulations in any case!!!

This looks wonderful!! I have a feeling if I tried this, it would look really half-assed, but this is a terrific job. It reminds me of a New Mexico, or a sand painting. Really nice.

Bold, but not so much that it overpowers the tranquility of the bathroom. Great use of color - I absolutely love it.
