Behr's Studio Taupe (walls); charcoal (sofa, rugs, drapes); beige (chairs, drapes), white, and a hint of teal.
Color Inspiration
Our inspiration came from a 1950s photo of a charcoal colored living room. We wanted a room that had an updated mid-century style, but also included the organic/natural elements we love. The Studio Taupe gave us the earthy color we wanted, which also made the charcoal sofa and existing drapes stand out.
Color Tips
Do not be afraid to sample and experiment. The small color testers from Behr were tremendously helpful. After experimenting with 15-plus colors, we finally decided on Studio Taupe. Also, don't be afraid to paint the full room. Sometimes, you can't fully grasp the intensity of the color until the entire room is done. We've been in our house for 3 years, and have already used 48 gallons of paint. We joke that we've painted so much that we've lost about 25 square feet of living space!

A wonderful space. Just the right amount of color.

loved the comfortable but polished feel of the room and the understated colors. Gives off an urban vibe with a nod southern charm!

This is the same shape and layout as our living room, and this is just the inspiration I have been looking for! It's just gorgeous!
I second the question on the great rug.

I wish I could 'favorite' more than once, this is divine.
Triple on the rug question.

Well done! Looks like the warmer, more realistic rooms shown in the West Elm catalogs this season. (that's a compliment!)

This is gorgeous. I would also love to know the rug source, as well as the paint company.
thanks!

Wow! Thanks for the great comments on our room so far. There's actually two rugs in there that we layered. On the bottom is the clay-colored jute rug from West Elm, and the one on top (with the coral design) was purchased from CB2 a few years ago. We love that rug, but it wasn't big enough to fill the space.
The paint on the wall is from the Behr Paint+Primer line and it's called Studio Taupe. We tried about 15 different colors before we settled on that one.
I was a little hesitant to enter this in the Room for Color contest because there are no bright or outrageous colors in there, but color doesn't have to be bright or outrageous. These neutrals are very soothing to us, and it gives us a better space to experiment with different accent colors. Pops of red will look great during the winter, and we're excited about introducing some greens and yellows during spring.

That sofa + those curtains + the wall color = FABULOUS. The first word that came to mind when I saw your space was "tailored". It looks so good... Great job.

I like the curtains too. Can you tell us where you found them?

We could never find the curtains we liked at the right length, or in the right fabric, or for the right price. So, we made these. We found the fabric at a fabric store here locally, then just used Stitch Witchery to hem the edges. We found a grommet kit from Joann Crafts & Fabric and just popped them on there. For what we would have paid for two panels, we were able to make six overall (another pair are hung in our dining room).

Love the rug as well and that was really clever to layer another rug below it. Great space!

Beautiful! Where did you get that couch?
view mapgirl's profile
The couch came from a local store, Sprintz, but it is made by Rowe. They have multiple fabric options and we really liked the charcoal color of this one.

Very sophisticated color palate and wonderful use of space. Love the subtle textures of glass, wood, fabrics, etc. Very elegant, warm, and inviting. Good job. YOU should get a shot at Oprah's show !

Just ran across this - it's exactly what I,ve been trying to do with our living room (for the past 9 years) and gave up. I couldn't find a gray sofa to save my life. I guess I was ahead of the design times cuz now they're everywhere! This gave me the inspiration to try again - it's beautiful.
