At Joann's fabrics I saw that they sold sailcloth in many different colors. And they also have outdoor fabric that's patterned. And I would just go online and buy beanbag stuffing in bulk.

I use the top one for straining cans of tuna. Finally I don't have to smell like tuna when I get done draining the water!!

You could use floating shelves so that you can still see most of the mural. And maybe you can even find/build acrylic shelves?
