What a timely post as I thought that the collapsing bed issue was solved - until I woke up last Saturday at 3am because the MIDDLE SUPPORT BAR COLLAPSED and I found myself nearly on the ground.
I just noticed that the BDDW Captain's Mirror is on sale at The Gardener (as posted last week). $900 for either size! Still not a steal, but they're regularly $1400-$1600, I believe.

Notwithstanding rude friends, you could always cover the Nelson bench with a custom made glass top, maybe at least that would protect the top from getting scratches!

The bed in the pic reminds me of Martha Stewart's line. Looks pretty classic and could probably go either contemporary or more traditional:

Searing meat also makes a nice fond at the bottom of the pan that when deglazed, definitely makes the gravy/sauce/braising liquid more flavorful!
