I'd be surprised if there wasn't somewhere online to find patterns for free. Of course, I thought the same thing about the Grass Armchair and never found that.
You could play with Ikea's Lerberg CD / DVD shelf. The green might even be nice? It stores what you're after, and can be fun to play with the up down / across configuration. After built-ins, I'd...
For apartments tight on space, but with a metal door, I also like the magnetic mesh bins from the Container Store. I use that, and have a chalkboard stuck above for to-do and shopping lists. ...
Go through 2 towels a week, and change the sheets once a month. Might do the sheets more often if it didn't involve me lugging them to the cleaners. In-building laundry, how I long for you...
Ikea bulbs are not the best, but that's because they're cheap Ikea bulbs. They've always lasted long enough for me, though. And most CFLs are not dimmable.
Speaking of dimmable CFLs ...
I like the idea of painting the exit door a bold color. You could also get large letters to hang reading EXIT, CLOSET, or whatever. Could be nice in a pop artish sort of way, how I picture it.
It looks like colored electrical tape, which comes up really clean. A friend (graphic designer) actually did murals with electrical tape in her old apartment. It had a great affect without painting.
I used standard lack shelfs for my desk for a while. I had keyboard / mouse on a lower one, and a flat screen on one above, and printer above that. Worked fine, but check your weights.
