Agree with the 'leave it alone' crowd. It has character and history -- maybe contrast it next to some very modern pieces or go with Lisa Hunter's suggestion re shape reference.

Why do think mattresses look bad on a platform? We just bought a thick mattress (at least 12" but I haven't measured) and wanted a platform. We didn't choose this mattress for ourselves but ended...
