What I usually do is to put vinegar in a small, shallow bowl, but then I put oil or butter on the edge of the dish. When the flies land, they get stuck.

I'd grow herbs, probably rosemary or thyme, which I use a lot of all year long. I grow them outside in the summer, but use dry or store-bought herbs in the other seasons. Cool item.
