I think the space needs color and/or a focal point. Also, all those angular surfaces and tile are kind of... cold. I'm thinking that color and fabric will give you the most bang for your buck:
I'd pull a green from one of the paintings.
Or, if you want to play it safe, I'd go with grey, brown or off-white (pulled from the painting on the chimney).
I think this is a great idea.
Especially if the emphasis is actually on 1) long-term savings (both energy and money) and 2) solutions that can be used around the rest of the country.

I just saw the organic bedding set at Target. It felt really nice and I would have been tempted to grab it had I not *just* bought new sheets.
Alas, there is no design dictatorship in this household. The democratic home-design process takes much, much longer.

I vote for white. White cabinets are classic. Black or grey cabinets are also a very interesting idea.
How about: Where do you keep your littler box? What is your preferred way of cleaning up litter? How you deal with cat hair on clothes and furniture?
